I played through Axiom Verge during my three day stay at the hospital last month for the birth of my second child. Exploration and power-ups were great, and the difficulty was perfect for what I was looking for. I honestly don't remember the soundtrack much, but I might have been playing it with low sound or something.

As for AM2R, I only ever played through the first area of the game, and it was right before the release of the Metroid 2 remake on 3DS (which is why I found myself playing it). Is it worth a full playthrough, and how does it compare to Axiom Verge? Will my playthrough of Samus Returns on 3DS make the game too easy (or rather, will it feel like I'm playing the same game)?

Edit: I've been in a Metroidvania phase as of late. I also played through Hollow Knight a couple weeks ago, as well as Bloodstained when that came out. Any other recommendations? And what about Prime; is there anything comparable to a Prime game?

And to my knowledge, Metroid Prime is the only game of its kind.

Maybe Recore for the XBone/PC? It was made by some key people from Retro. While not nearly as good, and maybe not quite a Metroidvania, it did scratch some of the Metroid Prime itch. Really felt like a 6th generation game.

Was trying to decide between the original or the sequel. I got the original for $7.50 on Switch, may or may not get a chance to play it tonight, but looking forward to it.

You could have gone for Guacamelee One-Two Punch Collection too but at $7.50 I think you had a good deal on a fantastic game.

Still waiting for Metroid Prime Trilogy on Switch, so I can actually play a Metroid game and know anything about it.

Come to think of it, the Nintendo Switch is the only Nintendo console I can't play Metroid Prime on. I have an old silver GameCube with the game, my Wii can run to GC disc and I bought Prime Trilogy on Wii U and you know what? I'd buy it again on Switch in a heartbeat.

Wait, is that a thing? I was looking for a bundle that included both on Switch but didn't come across it. I wasn't too thorough, though. Now that I think about it, and I'll have to confirm when I get home from work, but I think the price of standalone Guacamelee 2 was more than $7.50. Oh well, I should consider getting it while it's still on sale.

I only played for about 20 minutes last night and so far the game is pretty good. The gameplay is fun, but I feel I should mention that it did seem a bit less polished than I was expecting. I'm not sure if I like the game using colored blocks instead of replacing them with something feasible as a means of blocking transport, but perhaps this game is more focused on the beat-em-up aspect and the colored blocks allow the player to quickly glance at the map and find places they can or can't explore.

Combat is satisfying, and I'm sure it gets even better as I unlock more of my move set. I'm going to try out the multiplayer this weekend with my daughter and see how that goes.

And on the subject of the Axiom Verge sequel; is that just wishful thinking, or do we have reason to believe that Thomas Happ is actually working on a sequel (a 16-bit sequel, no less).

There's more to the upgrades than just the different punches and colored blocks don't worry but there is in fact a bigger emphasis on combat than most metroidvanias in Guacamelee.

I think it was said in an AMA that he was working on a game in the same universe. Not sure if that means sequel or what. I don't think there's any evidence that it'll be a 16 bit sequel. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Dangit, my thread died! :<

OT: My favorite's Metroid Fusion. I know some people don't like it that much, but I always felt like it was the funnest.

I think this might be because the latest post in your thread is almost two years old. But Metroid is just a beautiful topic and as you can see people like to talk about it, so OP took the chance and Power Bombed this thread into the community. Don't be sad, it was a fun ride.

I remember when Curl made a thread where he specifically talked about horror elements in Metroid games and he might have put that into your thread already, but he, as well as OP (and as well as myself, too), probably didn't remember that it even existed.

@Proxy-Pie...

Yeah, I'll be honest...I can't remember if I didn't know your thread existed or if I forgot it existed, but I'm sorry for starting another Metroid thread.  I was just jonesing for some Metroid conversation since Nintendo isn't giving us much to report on.  Thankfully many posters here were feeling the same way and gave this thread a lot of life and discussion.  Sometimes older, longer threads make people feel that the conversation already doesn't include them and sometimes that's why threads have a hard time staying active for too long.  Yours lasted for quite a while from what I saw.

@thread

Regarding my offhand comment about a Thomas Happ 16-bit Axiom Verge sequel...I have absolutely no information on the development of such a title.  I just think it makes sense, and honestly, if Happ is as much of a Metroid fan as we are (and I assure you he is or more) then he would love to see his legacy attached to a Metroid-like in the vein of Super Metroid.  He has been hush-hush on his Twitter, but he's definitely working on something as he keeps mentioning coding/programming questions.

Now taking nominations for the next poll in this thread...considering we just spent a bit of time discussing Metroidvanias, what are you favorite Metroidvanias? Nonimate up to 5 and I'll put the top 10 in a poll. If we don't get ten nominations you'll have to rely on me to fill in the blanks.
