Will we have a GOTY community?

You mean where we add all the GOTY from different people in one list? There's already a site called GOTY picks.

I really enjoyed god of war 4, but im not sure if it beats rdr2. Maybe i need to play through it again, but parts of the game felt unfinished. Some of the locations you go to, are short in gameplay length, and felt like there should have been more, in that area. Some of the beasts had similar kill animations, and those locked areas really got to me. Part me of was thinking they didn't get enough time to put more in. Story wise, i think there was more to see in RDR2, the main protagonist had more to say. Still love both games, and another classic Dragon quest 11 is also deserved of the title game of year.

I put 90s by accident actually.  It kind of started in the 90's with the over the top violence gigantic muscles and anger and giant weapons (Spawn/Wolverine/Punisher/Venom/Cable if you were into comics). The 00's was kind of an extension of that trope.  They still had the dark past (Kratos' origin is pretty similar to the Punisher, and even more similar to Old Man Logan, although that was a bit later), but at least they didn't look visually as silly and over the top.  But darker heroes were very much a thing.

I honestly didn't get very far into God of War (I think only to the part with the fortress where you had to move the whole thing?) but it seemed like Kratos' solution to feeling bad about being a prick was to be more of a prick.  Gameplay was pretty good, but I have a hard time finishing a game if I'm not at least somewhat invested in the characters. I felt the same way with the DMC reboot where the gameplay was very solid, but the lead was so annoying I just gave up.  I've been curious to try the other games, but if he's like that throughout the series, maybe it's not for me.

That is pretty much the point of his character arc in the older games, his own self-destructiveness

Well, that may be the point, but that doesn't mean I'm going to like it. I'm not presenting any of this as a flaw, just not to my personal taste.

One of the points of the story is precisely to see Kratos soften a bit and act less like a prick toward his son. It takes time, it's rather subtle I think, but Kratos at the end is clearly not the same as the beginning. Maybe you should play more... The gameplay becoming better and better as the game progresses too, you could enjoy it more.

It's not like I'm averse to playing it.  Just a whole lot of games and not a whole lot of time.

Both are fantastic games, yes :) And Dragon Quest 11 was amazing too.

Pretty sure you already know this but Smash counts for next year awards.

No, it will likely get screwed out of getting anything.  Xenoblade 2 could have easily been nominated for several awards this year, but it didn't happen.  I feel like of a game releases in December, it automatically disqualifies itself bu default which is a shame.

Awards are stupid and pointless, but yea any December release pretty much screws a game from them.

Most don't consider it for the year it released and then the next year it's like they forget it as well. I mean as you said Xenoblade 2 was on like 0 lists for RPG. If that doesn't tell you something.
