My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

This was an excellent week for Switch.I will be the first to admit:I knew Lets Go would move consoles, but not to this extent. And honestly, taking into account that digital will probably add about 20% more units to the number of copies sold, the title also did more than I expected.Overall, this is a much better week than I expected for Nintendo.
It should be noted too that the only title that saw growth in the Switch userbase was the only one that launched this week:Pokemon. All the other evergreens remained static. So I fully expect to, when people that bought a Switch for Pokemon are done with that game, to go out and buy the other evergreens. So we should see a significant increase in their numbers from next week foward.
And honestly, PS4 numbers are simply sad and dissapointing.I mean, it should be expected because the system is going for its 6th year but still. The cannibalization that started early this year will just increase next year if the numbers from the past few weeks are anything to go by.New titles will have less and less effect on consoles sales due to the "old age" of the PS4, and given the Switch big success in Japan(since this is a discussion about japan) and Sony stupid new guidelines regarding censorship, Switch will start having more and more third parties on its systems, be it multiplatform or exclusive, making PS4 situation in Japan even worse.Honestly, I wont be surprised if we get a few sub 10k weeks next year for PS4.

NoCtiS_NoX said: This thread SMH. OT: Am I the only one disappointed with Pokemon Let's Go sales? The hardware is fantastic but Pokemon is underwhelming IMO. It's not bad but not great either. It's still a Pokemon game. I won't try to sugar coat it even if I am huge Pokemon fan. Japan is where it should do monstrous numbers. Maybe trying to capture the Go players was not really a good idea but for what it's worth. It's just an okay sale. Hopefully it will have legs. |
Maybe it's just me, but I've been under the impression that Go was a bigger craze in the West than in japan and also lifted western Pokemon sales siginficantly more, at the launch of Sun and Moon. I seem to recall specifically people saying that Pokemon already had petty much maximum market reach in japan and didn't have much growth potential, compared to the west. That's why Go, while still a hit, wasn't the phenomenon it was in the west and also didin't lift core-title sales much.
Japan already loves and buys core pokemon titles, they didin't need a more casual experience to be roped back by nostalgia.
Now the WW numbers seemingly confirm that theory. The Let's Go games seemingly managed to covert some Go players to the console, with them achieving solid sales despite part of the hardcore fans skipping over it. The sales also overwhelmingly came from the west, where the bigger Go audience seems to be.
Despite all that I think the game will have good legs. It has great word of mouth with even hardened fans of the series appreaciating it for what it is and does and bein pleasantly surprised.
With 200k in Japan alone, global Switch sales for this week could well be over 600k.

It is possible when:
-Vita is gone
-3DS doing Vita numbers or gone
- PS4 is declining because PS5 is coming or no big games
- Switch releases either AC/MH or Pokemon

On top of that, Pokemon has been steadily declining in Japan for the last decade or so.

IMO developing it for switch cost more then the 3ds games. I could be wrong but that's what I believe. It's also not the most profitable Pokémon ever at launch despite charging a lot more. So it's not like it broke the record for revenue or profitability. |
What kind of logic is this? Pokemon X and Y is probably the highest pokemon game ever in term of production cost compared to Let's go since it was the first transition toward 3d engine, while Let's go used a lot of previous game assets and the marketing of Let's go is also pales in comparison to other mainline pokemon titles.

Plus, when you really get down to it, Let's Go is just an HD, 3D remake of Yellow with GO mechanics slapped onto it.

BFV doing surprisingly well on Amazon JP. Interested in first week sales. I wonder will it get longer then usual legs when the BR releases next year. The fact the maps are free DLC as well should help.

Vita is basically gone and 3ds is very close to Vita numbers. Only PS4 is left. I think it's best chance is next year when AC releases or when Pokémon next gen releaees. Capcom is very stupid so I don't know even if switch will ever get it's own monhun
