Forums - Politics Discussion - The Uncertainty In School Shooting Numbers

Only 11 out of 235 reported school shootings in 2015/16 appear to be real, 224 are most likely false statistics. What's the reason for faking these numbers?

The School Shootings That Weren't

The government reported school-related shootings at 235 schools in one recent academic year. NPR could not confirm 224 of them.

I worked in a school this year. We had a staff meeting to prepare us for a school shooting. It didn’t actually give us anything, more a room for hysterics and anti-gun circle jerking. So I looked up statistics and found there are there’s usually around 10 shootings per year. Mostly high school. Almost never elementary. Each is a crying shame of unspeakable evil, stupidity, and mental illness. With how freaking many schools there are the chance of a school shooting are around the same as being struck by lightning.

Anyway. I never saw any reports that said 240 in a year. So that’s a ridiculous number. No wonder it got investigated. If that were true we’d have to actually do something to address why kids are sinking to such depravity.

Cool. Now what are we gonna do about the confirmed shootings?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

The article talks about mainly about problems such as confusing questions, reporting errors (37 were a mistake from a school district), and the fact that this is all self-reporting without collaboration. The "faking" allegation seems to be from the OP.

"Never happened" and "Could not be confirmed" seem like semantically significantly different things.

Whoa, careful there buddy. You might get kicked off social media going around spreading info like that.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

I thought the whole point of social media was spreading fake news.

What is their criteria for a shooting? Anyone with an IQ higher than 20 knows this a spin or should i say "fake news"

Even 11 school shootings in one year are still way too many if you ask me.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Big takeaway is that this result was from a school survey, meaning that it isn't some government conspiracy to inflate numbers of school shooting, it's just schools reporting stuff wrong.
For example some schools conflated "shootings" with "incidents when a gun went off", or just answered a question on the wrong line.
The article criticizes the lack of oversight, but notes the number is within the margin of error for all reported.

The actual number of shootings reported for 2015-2016 is 29 (Everytown for Gun Safety), a shameful number, only rising due to the negligence of U.S. government to act and ban the fucking things.
My country, achieved ZERO school shootings that year (and that decade tbh), but I guess gun control doesn't work.
