It does make sense. Japan wants handhelds. Why would Sony forsake their record profits and release a handheld? Japan is also a country where people spend a lot of their free time outside or commuting. Even the Wii didn’t sell very well there compared to other markets. They have just moved to gaming on the go.

That isn't the full explanation though. Sony shunned the japanese market at first with a later release and a western oriented lineup. This are the reasons the PS4 started so slow, that it even seemed possible the WiiU would stay ahead. These failures of Sony in the beginning of the life of the PS4 still hamper momentum.

That’s because Japan is a minor market. With the shortages at launchh, it would have not been possible to release in Japan at the same time. As for western oriented line-up, isn’t that what most Japanese devs are doing now - focusing on the west? How do you explain the Wii selling poorly in Japan compared to other regions? The console market has been dwindling since last generation.

Japan is a very minor market when compared to North America and Europe.

In terms of individual countries, Japan has a very large video game market, but it has been left behind in the dust when it comes to regional markets.

The old Japanese region now has to be called the Asian Market if its to compete with Europe and America in terms of playstation. No individual country bar the USA has sold more ps4's then Japan. It's obviously very important to Sony. Not only have they increased sales this gen over the ps3 last gen but the profit margin for the console both hardware and software is ridiculously better. Oh Sony care alright.

Japan is the 10th most populated country in the world so it makes sense that it sells a lot of PS4s. It’s just not big enough to be treated as a region like it used to be. Also, Sony doesn’t care because otherwise they would try and build Japanese-centric franchise.

Of course Japan is very important. I'm not just saying that because Nintendo is doing very well there, but because Japan as a market is very important for directions/trends and overal culture these Japanese developers rely on. It is also no small market when you look at hardware and software sales to any other individual country with relative populations. A good example are the great sales of Monster Hunter World and Splatoon 2.

Japan = Games

That’s true, Japan = Games oriented towards the western market.

Sales were simply more split up between home consoles in gen 7 compared to gen 6.

PS2 (23.18)+GC (4.04)+XB (0.53)=~27.75 million

PS3 (10.47)+Wii (12.77)+360 (1.66)=~24.90 million

There was not a massive decline from gen 6 to gen 7 in Japan.

Don’t forget the Dreamcast. It dropped from 30M to 24.9M so a 17% decline. That’s despite the huge casual appeal of the Wii which caused the Wii to outperform. It dropped a further 58% so far due to MS not bothering with Japan like they did with the 360 and the WiiU tanking. 17% decline I think is big when you factor in the Wii casual appeal as it makes it look like a smaller decline that it could have been.

The only place treated like a region is America. The UK, Germany, France etc are all individual countries just like Japan and are treated as such. The population of Europe is dramatically higher then Japan and its ridiculous in this day and age to expect the ps4 to sell similar in Japan as Europe.

There's only 1 country on the planet that sold more ps4's then Japan and that's America with its 450m population. Japan is holding it's own and is very important to Sony just like every other major market for it.

That massive gen 6 decline makes ps4 sales even more impressive this gen

I mean gen 6 and 7 the home console market was quite big. This gen it's very small yet the ps4 will still cross 10m and do similar numbers to the Wii and PS3.
