Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Nintendo focusing too much on DLC?

So Nintendo has made DLC for almost every game that it released in 2017. At the same time 2018 has been a bit of a slow year for Nintendo, when compared to 2017. Should Nintendo be focusing on all this DLC, or would they have been better off putting all that effort into having one or two more games for earlier this year?

I haven't really made up my mind on this, but there are arguments both for and against it.

On one hand, most of Nintendo's DLC has been sort of lackluster. I mean, is BotW and Splatoon 2 DLC really all that good?

On the other hand Torna: The Golden Country is practically it's own damned game at this point, and it's become something I'm looking forward to as much as full blown AAA game offerings.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Is Nintendo's newfound love for DLC good for them? Good for consumers? Or do you wish they just made more games?

Nintendo was bound to go down this road sooner or later. Yeah it'll probably get worse. Far worse.

I wouldn't mind Mario Odyssey DLC with an extra world or two. But Nintendo is just getting with the times, they just need to put effort into their DLC's so they are worthy expansions to all their games.

No

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

I trust that Nintendo knows what is good DLC and what is bad DLC. They are also releasing a lot of free content-updates for games like Arms, Splatoon and Kirby.

Around the Network

The way Splatoon is supported is awesome. Free updates including new multiplayer modes, new maps , new weapons, new gear, among other changes keep the game feeling fresh (no pun intended). It's exactly how DLC should be handled in multiplayer games. Octo Expansion is great, with a pretty good plethora of single player content

BOTW had a very meh first dlc pack, but the second one was excellent with the new shrines and the dungeon (plus the motorbike too). It added some backstory to the four champions too.

Super Mario Odyssey add a few things post launch (new photo mode options, new costumes, and balloon world). Not really that substantial, but free is free.
I don't own MarioXRabbids, but generally the reception of the DK Adventure DLC has been good, too.
Mariokart 8 just got BOTW Link plus the bike as a free update, with more updates likely to come.

I think Nintendo has done DLC great for the most part.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

I still need to import my Gold Edition cart from the PAL region. That cart doesn't exist here in NA.

Well there's a reason it's called DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT.

I wish Xenoblade Chronicles 1 had got an expansion like that one.

I seriously doubt it would make much of a difference either way.
