Forums - Gaming Discussion - Housemarque moving on to less niche genres

Honestly I'm excited to see what they come up with. IMO they haven't made a bad game.

Moving on to more popular genres isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as the team retains their core identity and the style which made their games stand out.

If the money dictates it then they really have no choice. They're a good developer, so I don't doubt that their next game will be a good one, no matter the genre.

They mentioned online multiplayer so I hope they won't jump into already heavily contested spaces like MOBA or hero shooters.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Less niche? I wouldnt label games as common as shooty arcade games niche.

HM not making much profit isnt surprising. The contenders are numerous, on all platforms, with similar themes and gameplay.

Hunting Season is done...

I really like them as a developer but while I love Stardust, I've found it hard to get into some of the others. Sony put effort into publishing Stardust, on their own they might not be able to make games like Nex stand out.

This said, maybe it's time they expanded their repertoire, so to speak. Maybe Sony can help them by giving them a new project. Maybe revive one of the many licences Sony owns from Psygnosis... basically make G-Police and make it VR as well.

Hmm, pie.

Have the Indies ate on their niche?

My class just had an art director from Housemarque teaching us how to use Substance Painter. It was really informative.

This is some sad development, even though I'm not a huge fan of their arcade style. It seems like their style hasn't been profitable enough so they're moving on to more contested genres, but that sounds like a really risky move to me. I'm probably overinterpreting this, but this sounds sort of like a last resort.

Read this recently. Really sucks. I’ve gotten almost every one of their games except Matterfall bc the reviews weren’t great. Nex Machina is so good. Resogun is amazing. Hopefully this is a positive change! They said we’ll be surprised by the type of game they’re switching to.
