Nope man, winning =/= killing. Or are you using the dictionary like MS does? Does the year also only comprises of Holiday?

Exactly, this guy sounds like a baseball fan from the 1950s: "I don't care if he gave up 10 runs a game! He won 35 games! He killed the league!"

What? If your using a baseball picking analogy, it woudl go more like this.

Nintendo as a pitcher  has an ERA of 3.2 and his record is 5 wins 2 losses

Sony as a pitcher has an ERA of 4.1 and his record is 2 wins and 5 losses. But the Sony pitcher has one no hitter.

Sony had one amazing game, but overall the Nintendo pitcher is the better pick.

So Samus Returns did somewhere along the lines of 100k in its first month?

D: How did you get that idea?

It's killing it by month wins, it won 5 of 7 months, and again, Switch achieved that supply problems in past months and with best PS4 year until now while this is 1st Switch year, so yes, Switch sales are killing it.

Nobody talks about whole year, but about sales until now, and yes, Switch sales are killing it, they are very impressive, Switch outsold PS4 (that is selling great and it is in its best year until now) in 5 of 7 months and done that with big supply problems.

To be frank, a system in its launch year beating a system in its peak year is pretty damn impressive.  Yeah the PS4 leads year to date but a huge part of that is January and February sales which pad the PS4's count vs Switch.  So yeah, the Switch beating the PS4 us killing it in many people's books because it's not just by how much you win, it's who you beat.  No one said it's destroying the PS4, which would imy substantial victory margins.

And all this is more impressive when you consider the PS4 is tracking to be one of the best selling systems ever.  And the PS4 had major releases in September that the Switch didn't get.  And only like week was free of supply issues.

Do you really want to go semantics on this? TO kill PS4 would be to make it go the N64 and Gamecube route of very low sales and losing the race tremendously. PS4 is having a better year after Switch launched and isn't even to much behind (and WW is still ahead) so how is that killing. Yours, Miyamoto and these other people book need to use the correct verbatim.

Sigh. "Killing it!" is a colloquialism that refers to someone doing excellent at something.  The "it" refers to the thing you are doing it.  You're completely misunderstanding the phrase and interpreting the "it" as the PS4.  A boxer who has won 21 straight bouts is killing it, even if all were by decision.  A stock on the market climbing quickly is killing it, even if their competitor's is not falling.

Killing it just means doing really well, not necessarily devastating oponents.

So yeah, you need to use the correct meanings.  And don't challenge the person who studied writing on the meaning of phrases.

Well said.

This sounds like NPD announcing this news, not Nintendo...

And since when did NPD announces a company selling 2/3 of sales?

Redmond. washington is the HQ of Nintendo of Americas isn't it? Does NPD also have its HQ there? Nope they don't. This release looks much more like company PR than number releases.

I think the part we need to focus on is the bolded part below:

This is NPD, an organization that researches this stuff. They would know a statistic like "2/3 of sales".

I'm fine with Ninty including SNES Classic in teh HW total, but we also know that device, unlike the others, won't generate SW sales.

You're refining the analogy to a more specific case, but it would be more like Son't pitcher has an ERA of 2.8: fewer monthly wins, but overall better performance. If we want to go too far with it, we can say that Nintendo was called up later in the season and had a lower ERA lol. Ultimately, my point was that the gap is close, and one is not giving the other a swirly.

What you and others fail to grasp is the phrase "X is killing it!" doesnt. mean. that.

I didn't expect Switch to be above the PS4 this month. Probably means that Destiny 2 massively underperformed in shifting PS4 hardware. The first Destiny pushed the PS4 above 500k in September 2014, the sequel probably didn't even push it above 300k.

More importantly though, Switch is set to be #1 in the USA most of the time in the future. The PS4 inherits the position of the Xbox One that could only win the occasional NPD month. Xbox One is stuck in the mud.

I think D2's only potential, substantial sales bump would be during the holidays. It feels like the D2 player base is currently comprised on D1 players who already have a PS4. That being said, a flashy, whizbang, Michael Bay-esque ad campaign for BF and X-Mas could turn some heads.

Now that Switch is finally available and cleared the backlogs, we can get a real sense of MoM sales and system-seller bumps. It's been too long that we had no idea what moves the needle and how much.

What's an XBox One? The green thing in my living room?

I went alllllllll the way back to the beginning (begrudgingly), and the original statement didn't say that "x" was killing "y."

Only many pages and posts later did the two concepts become conflated and lost to a game of telephone.
