Forums - Movies & TV - I thought Orville was bad, but then...

I was expecting myself to not like Star Trek Discovery, but that 2 episode prologue really got my intrigued. Not going to pay for CBS all access though.

The Orville is good, gives off a TNG feel.

They're both good in my opinion.

Orville had a rough pilot, but episodes 2 and 3 felt like Star Trek: The Next Generation to me with a few jokes. MacFarlane even had a decent dramatic scene and the discussion on human and alien relative moral was interesting to watch unfold. It has flaws, but it comes from a genuine place of love so I appreciate that.

Discovery, despite its massive budget, rang hollow as an "Anti-Star Trek" with the focus on conflict rather than cooperation. I wasn't a fan of set design and make up, but would shrug that off if they got the feel right. For what I saw (first two episodes, and that's it due to CBS All Access paywall) it could easily have been a dozen generic sci-fi series. Nothing besides superficial elements spoke to the core of Star Trek.

My prediction: Discovery will be carried by Netflix deal to get another season, will fail and end up being "black sheep" of Star Trek family. Orville will get another season due to MacFarlane spending capital at Fox, but may have to reduce budget and develop a niche following justifying it being on the air for a few years.

Dream: Star Trek: The Third Generation - A true successor to older series, is released in 2022 restoring the series legacy.

As a watcher of everything Star trek, besides TOS, I was worried about discovery, I was expecting them to push sex and violence to try and get viewers, those worries were so far unfounded.

I enjoyed the first two episodes of discovery.

Also the Orville is watchable... Episode 2 was a marked improvement.. It's less of a comedy then I expected.

The Orville to me is like TNG with a little more humor. Star Trek Discovery is JJ trek and I hate it.

The Orville is great. It is pushing modern issues like Gender re-assignment, Sexuality, Feminism and so on... But wrapping that in a Star-Trek themed comedy.
Although... If I hear another marriage/cheating joke I might just scream at someone in 47 different french languages.

It's visuals are also decent for what it is... The story however doesn't seem to be building up to anything right now, that might change in a few more episodes as they may just be building out the characters.

Now Star Trek: Discovery is a visual treat for a Television show, I am keen to see where they take that show going forward, it is certainly playing homage to the theatrical films... I did enjoy the first two action packed episodes that's for sure... We haven't really had much in the way of a truly amazing Sci-Fi show since Star Trek, Firefly, Star Gate and Battlestar Galactica all wound down.

Absolutely!

House of Cards? Stranger Things? Master of None? Okja? Narcos? The Keepers? Beasts of No Nation? Kimmy Schmidt? Lemony Snicket? Bojack Horseman? The Crown? Jessica Jones? Daredevil? Glow? Making a Murderer? Orange is the New Black? 13th? Seriously?

House of Cards is awful. Daredevil ... a bit campy for me but I'd probably like it if I finished it. Haven't seen the other ones.

The 4 year Klingon war with the Federation, that is the focus for this series.

Have you watched The Expanse? Can't wait until season 3. Much more interesting plot lines than 4 year war with the Klingons. Dark matter has its moments as well. It didn't start great either so I'll give SD a chance. At least SD has a budget to do big things. I hope they don't waste it.

Star Trek Discovery is the best Star Trek I've seen for a very long time. Orville is boring and unfunny.

Ahhhh! I forgot about The Expanse. I adore that show... It's "Sci-Fi" but it respects newtonian physics (For humans anyway!) and has a ton of story lines criss-crossing with each other.

Dark Matter doesn't matter anymore. It got cancelled on a cliff-hanger, it also had a very StarGate Universish vibe, even adopted many of the same actors from StarGate Atlantis, didn't really enjoy it that much to be honest.

Killjoys has also gotten convoluted, but the actors wear some awesome looking jackets at-least, I see it being cancelled after the next season.
