Is PSP3/Vita 2 actually a thing?

I'm genuinely curious what you all think.

Personally, I'm not convinced it's on the horizon at all.

With PS4 performing so great, I just don't think Sony wants to risk diverting resources towards it. I think the Switch success took them by surprise as much as anyone else - so anything in the works to compete with that is probably still very, very early in development if it all. They still have a VR  and 4K platform to build on too.

If it were to arrive in the next year, I would certainly think they'd obviously want to have Monster Hunter as a launch window game for the portable - but not sure if that could happen given MHW launches in January.

The overall level of speculation of PSP3  feels to be at a lower level than NX was even back in 2015 - but if I missed something let me know.

If it were to come, I predict Sony will have scrambled to get it out there - though if it had a similar dev process to Switch that could be great for everyone.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Not that I am against the idea, I just think that Sony's PlayStation division has their hands tied with the PS4 and PSVR. I don't think that they will distribute any of their resources into another platform at this point in time.

The switch proves its viable. (handheld + dock)
I could see sony doing a simular product, that plays PS4 games at like half the resolution.
So its like a handheld PS4, just it renders everything at lower res.

Maybe with 7nm and latest technology it becomes possible.
They would need to stick with normal microSD cards though, and make a tool that easily translates any PS4 game into a PS4P one (runing at smaller resolution).

I think instead of calling it a PSP3 or Vita 2, they should call it a PS4P.

I don't think it is going to happen.

Sorry but no.

Theres more hope and better ending for a direct sequel of the 3DS than this.

What would be the point?
The PSP and PSVITA proved to SONY that while they can make a technically superior handheld they can not support the console with the quality and 'portability' of franchises as can Nintendo.

If SONY makes a PSP3 that can run near PS4 Quality games it wouldn't change anything in increasing its success, the reason the Switch is a hit is not its amazing specs but rather the content.

I foresee the only way a PSP3 could have any notable success is if it runs PS4 Games themselves and is as an optional PS4 Portable and not its own console. It would not be another pillar of PS gaming but rather just a 'nisch' version of the PS4 for those that want to play PS4 on the Go.

I don't think they care enough. They have enough dominance on the regular console market as it is, and they still have to support their VR catalogue, I don't think they'd want to share their effords between more hardware.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

The thing is, the only way a PS handheld could be competitive is if it was spedcifically not a hybrid.

A portable PS4 would be too expensive, too bulky and it wouldn't have enough internal memory to play PS4's library. In other words: practically impossible.

Developers aren't going to compress their games to fit on small cartridges just because Sony asks nicely. Good luck fitting a 100 GB game on a cartridge.

Maybe by then 500GB-1TB microSD are cheap enough to make such viable?
