If X1/X1X can maintain 7-8 million units a year, then they should just stay the course.

At some that could achieve the 360 userbase.

zero chance of that happening, even hitting 50 million his somewhat doubtful at the current pace unless you expect the current console generation to last an extremely long time (like 202x) and honestly think Microsoft wouldn't update a struggling system.  Which, by all accounts, the Xbox One X will likely be

If the current pace stays the same than 50 million is inevitable. I mean this pace would have around 60 million by the end of 2020. This why I keep saying X1 is doing fine if they can they keep sales steady. It already has a viable userbase at 30 million.

The days of selling a console at a huge loss are over. So MS could keep Xbox running without taking huge risks, that's kinda why the X1S and X1X exist in a relatively short period.

I imagine around 2021 MS will launch a new X1 that will be significantly more powerful than X1X. While the original X1 can be phased out after 8 years of support. I think incremental upgrades while supporting the previous hardware revision is their best route. So something like this, $249 X1X and $499 X1X-2, both of which will share games.

I actually think they will quit and concentrate on PC stuff

Well that's kinda what they're doing. According to MS the X1 and Windows 10 can share games with little work.

Xbox is the best way to appeal to gamers that don't want to use a PC and that's a large audience.

Xbox Live for PS5 and PC.

The difference between Sony and MS is console space is that for Sony it is a must win battle and for MS it is a side quest. On the other hand Windows and Enterprise business are the money makers for MS and especially Windows is turning out to a real must win battle. They lost the mobile phones and tablets, and fighting fornthe remains of mobile business with Windows 10 and Surface. Desktop and hard core windows gaming are in long term becoming a niche as most users are drifting towarda mobile. Personally I do not see any reason for building a desktop PC anymore.

So what will MS do if XbX fails commercially. I think they migrate Xbox brand to mobile gaming, with Surface and Win10 and take the battle with Steam. This would fit their strategy better than consoles. I could see MS coming out with statement that "The console is dead, the future is mobile gaming in Windows10-XboxLive-on Surface".

I doubt it will fail, its part of the X1 family so its only there to add variety and choice. Its not there to smash console records.

No idea why MS have a separate hardware business for video games when they have the most used operating system ever.
They are basically asking people to invest in video games twice considering most people on this planet have a windows based pc.
Their best bet is to leave hardware behind and just focus on pushing software on windows. I really don't see the current team at Xbox being able to turn the tide in Japan and EU. For that tide to turn it seems as thought MS will have to hope Sony drops the ball as that seems like the only way Xbox can compete with PS is if they screw up. If Sony is on it's A games next gen also it's gonna be very painful for MS and Xbox

The way you look at it, you are basing your logic off a sales race, if its a race than yes MS should leave the console race. Ifs its about profits and revenue than MS should stay in the console buisness because the X1 is as successful as the 360.

I still think Microsoft will drop out of the console market anyway. If it does fail, which I do think it will (sorry for being a pessimist) then Microsoft would do good to become a multiplat developer. Bring their games to a bigger audience and make money that way.

Not hard to figure out what will happen then the successor to X1 will then be forwarded.

Windows all the way. In fact it's already happening.
