Forums - Gaming Discussion - Could Apple or Nintendo make VR mainstream?

Apple has yet to make an equivalent to the Gear VR, and I believe this is holding back VR in it's potentially most mainstream sector; Mobile. Smart phones have a huge install base and are powerful enough for entry level VR experiences.

Nintendo popularized motion control by integrating it fully into their Wii console. Integrated solutions for new technologies are more effective than peripheral attatchments because you get access to the entire market rather than a fraction of it. Imagine Nintendo creating a VR console in 5 years time with 4K resolution, no wires, 150 degrees field of view, lighter and smaller form factor with support for Mario Kart, Zelda, F-Zero and the VR equivalent of Wii Sports.

Sales prediction, PS4: 122 Million, Xbox one: 50 million, Switch: 105 million.

Eh........ did they made the smart watches any bigger?

Pocky Lover Boy!

No one can. It's just nich product until it's very cheap and doesn't require goggles.

Yes, it's 3 times as popular as the Samsung watch apparently.

I can't see anyone making VR mainstream any time soon, if ever.

Especially can't see how it would be done with smartphones. Mobile games may be popular, but I don't think having to lug around a massive headset and be cut off from the rest of the world while playing games is going to go down at all well with those that like mobile games.

It will get smaller and lighter in the future and VR is obviously a home based experience.

I guess it can have a similar effect towards the samsung gear.

Actually, it could make more sense for Nintendo to have a AR/VR hybrid system so they could create a game like Pokemon Go, but that would mean it would have to be a handheld based system and thus sacrifice power as a result.

Forget VR, I honestly think Apple will make AR mainstream over the next few years.

Hasn't pokemon Go shown that AR is already mainstream? What do you think Apple will add to the AR sector?

No.

VR won't be mainstream until a lot of big changes are made to the hardware. We're talking about really expensive and cutting edge technology.

Nintendo is not about cutting edge, not anymore, they are more about how to make a simple but innovative technology into a gameplay idea. VR is too complexe.

Apple is not investing into anything innovative anymore.

So no, I don't see any of them making VR popular.
