Forums - Gaming Discussion - Psyonix will continue to work with and update Rocket League rather than making sequels

They're smart guys, this model has been proven to work, I think this is what Destiny and Titanfall should have been like, but well...

The issue with Destiny, is they held themselves back with PS3/Xbox360, it might be what Destiny 2 does. However they also need to open up crappy transactions in order to keep this up.

The core gameplay of RL is strong and timeless and it also helps that there is zero competition in that genre. And as I said in my other post, there is nothing a sequel could provide that DLC to the current game can't.

RL is 2 years old and still gets over 200k concurrent users regularly. And that is despite nobody talking about it. This will go on for quite some time until a competitor steps up.

Everything gets stale. Eventually, people will leave and they'll either have to make a new game or do something else.

Sure, but if RL gets stale one day a sequel won't save it. Because the core gameplay is already perfect.

Not a great comparison.

Rocket League has become a suprisingly popular competitive and e-sport thing.

Destiny and Titanfall didn't achieve that. Relatively simple tweaks and updates wasn't gonna keep them relevant. It seems like a large audience didn't even stick around for the Destiny DLC.

It isn't, they're totally different things pug, just saying that's what they should have aspired to be from the get go, or rather that's what I would have done if it was up to me

Hah! You erased my point.

Also, how many titles succeed just doing simple tweaks and updates over years? Rocket League is an anomaly.

EA could do it easily with their sports games. And then there are Blizzard games.

Yep, Blizzard games also an anomaly in the industry of countless games. They also have massive userbases around the world which makes the microtransaction system more viable.

I don't think the EA or 2K sports titles are as viable with just small updates and some paid DLC items.

Frankly, it might make sense to release a new Rocket League every year if they could sell millions every year. But I'm not sure it can or if they can make enough changes to justify it.

They simply don't need to. They're currently making millions with crates and DLC. It would be completely wasted effort.

I agree, the annual releases would actually be bad for Rocket League because it would split its audience.

However, Rocket League is a small budget, unlicensed product. The revenue it generates is a lot smaller than popular annual games.

Quake and Unreal have decided to go the route of a single release with a long life span of updates. But these are also products that aren't very relevant anymore. So it makes sense for them.
