Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie: the 4K audience is “a bit too limited,” talks fan feedback

He is right about the 4K thing, but it irks me to no end every time they use the phrase "we want our products to be affordable".  Like, really?? the New 3DS XL is still selling for $200 and the Wii U for $300!

And the Switch is more expensive than the PS4 (WITH A GAME INCLUDED!).

Now, I can accept the "we offer games that can only be played here" and "we offer new ways to play" but "affordable" is a word that they should be using.

What we meant was that you won't see any of their product piced over $300. BTW the top 3ds version (New 3DS XL) is still cheaper than Vita (the cheaper version), which makes it the cheapest handheld on the market (not to mantion that you can go as low as $90 with the 2DS) and I hate that PS4 price comparison. PS4 is almost 4 years on the market and you compare it with the system which was released 3 months ago. Remind me, how much was the PS4 at lunch?

Yeah, both the PS Vita and the N3DS XL are overpriced for what they are (basically ancient tech), but in this particular instance is not a Sony guy who we have in the front line shamelessly saying "we want our products to be affordable".

And about the PS4-Switch comparison, well, if I have the money to buy a product TODAY, I'm not gonna be thinking about how much said product costed 4 years ago, and how much is gonna cost 4 years down the line, because I have the money today, and I wanna buy it today.  So its price TODAY is the price I care about (Of course thats assuming I'm not expecting any price cut, special offer or promotions).  Not to mention that I always check all the options in the market to try to get the most for my money.

Others would think they're getting a console and a handheld for the price of a new console. It's like buying two for the price of one.

That's the whole point of the Switch: a console at home and a handheld for when on-the-go. It's in the marketing and it's in the name.

That's why I said "some people".  Not everyone is going to pay more for an SUV when they just want a car.

And that's why I said "others" as in those beside "some people".

His logic is that a reason to hold back on 4K is because the audience is too limited. This may be true. Full-HD TVs on the other hand are not too limited, still the Switch barely does games in 1080p. Not even games with last gen graphics. So what makes you think Nintendo will fully support 4K resolution when 4K TVs actually are commonly found in households?

I'm not going to restate what sc94597 said, but I will say that your argument still doesn't make sense. Your original statement made it seem that since Reggie said what he said, it also applies to 1080p games. Yet, now you are saying it in a different context. Still, this context doesn't matter either. If Nintendo decides to continue supporting 1080p over 4K in the future (which, honestly, wouldn't surprise me), their audience will be just as large as Sony or MS'. 4K TVs inherently support 1080p, as I'm sure you know. That, in the end, supports his argument. Either way, Reggie is, for once, right here. The question you are asking just doesn't apply.

They said that they inherently want it to be affordable.  That's not the same is saying they want the price as low as possible or that price is the only consideration.

Inherent --

adjective

1.  existing in someone or something as a permanent and inseparable element, quality, or attribute

You don't get to say "inherently" and then "well, sometimes."  An inherent value is always there--otherwise, it's not inherent.  It's as simple as that.  This is nothing but PR speak from Reggie.

Alright... if we're going to do definitions...

ADJECTIVE

  • Inexpensive; reasonably priced.

    ‘affordable homes’
There is no reason why a device can't have a gimmick that adds to the price, but still be affordable.  Those things are not mutually exclusive.

Frame rate is more important than resolution. It is nice to know that Super Mario Odyssey is running at 60 fps.

Why would you post a definition of affordable?  I never said they were mutually exclusive at all.  I said that they've ignored the affordable part when they wanted, which takes away the "inherently" claim.  I don't understand what you don't understand.

I never said it couldn't.  I said that I don't consider the original 3DS price-point and the overall value of the Wii U to be "inherently affordable".  You're free to have a different opinion, obviously.
