Microsoft, Nintendo, do it! Now!

Nothing new there, that is why it wasn't on xbox 360. And why it still isn't on xbox one.
Followed by Phil trying to spin it that FF14 was a "third party exclusive".

But all the "but but Sony doesn't want to do cross play" comments make me laugh each and every time I remember it.

True, back in 2013 when the game came out the director of FFXIV explained that the reason why it wasnt on Xbox was because the company (at least back then) didnt allowed cross play (source), but yeah because Sony for whatever reason didnt allowed cross play with minecraft lets pretend that they are completely against crossplay and are now blocking MS and Ninty, despite the fact that they have done cross play before with games like Portal 2 and SFV...

I bet you that the real reason why Sony didnt allowed cross play for Minecraft has to do with the fact that users on other consoles have to make Xbox accounts, so they probably dont wanna help MS increase those acount numbers. maybe its not the best reason out there but at least it makes more sense than the obvious bullshit Jim Ryan said...

That is absolutely the reason. It is like having to walk through a gamestop before shoping at a best buy.  Getting a target card before going to wal-mart.

They could have set it up another way I'm sure. This way they get free advertising, traffic, and and active users by forcing people to "tunnel through" their service.

Which is why I find Phil's PR spin so sickening. FF isn't on Xbox because they aren't allow cross play, not because of any third part exclusive deals.

Sadly there is no real way of knowing the truth but i also believe this is the reason, and if it is then i wish they would have just been honest because at least people would have seen the logic behind their decision, instead of making an excuse that looks like pure BS.

Sony wanted cross platform play with other consoles for FFXIV previously. Microsoft refused.
There seem to be different stipulations for different games.

Pretty much this, it would explain why they did crossplay with some games and not with others.

We've had discussions about this before, but FF14 seems to be in a really weird situation. Yoshida has repeatedly put the blame for no X1 version at MS's feat, and even now he's focusing the discussion on MS and Nintendo. He acts like Sony's consent has been their all along, but that's hard to believe given Sony's recent activity. I think we can reasonably ignore Minecraft as an example (Sony were never going to agree to have their players log into Xbox Live), but that still leaves Rocket League. Perhaps Sony themselves have a condition to cross-play, and RL failed to meet it but FF14 didn't? I've got no idea what that could be though.

If the requirement from Square is that all platforms be able to pay together, then there is zero chance of this happening. Why would Sony do that? It would cause them to lose the exclusivity of this title. But, if he just cares that XB and Switch can play together (or, maybe along with PC, if its getting a PC release), then this would seem likely to happen.

Didn't this game originally skip the XOne due to MS's online policies?

People forgot that detail, now its ammo to trash sony xD

Exactly!

Although Sony isn't free from this, let's not forget why things are done in the first place

MS deserved to be trashed and Sony should be trashed now.

Consumers want crossplay.

I don't think a Switch version would affect the others much. It should be capable of running 4.0 with some graphical compromises, and that's the first "no low spec hardware" expansion. Their biggest hurdle would be the CPU, but there are ways of working around that within the Switch version itself. The general game isn't too CPU intensive, it's just when hundreds of players are in 1 place that the CPU starts crying :p
