Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Finacial Times: Nintendo to produce 18M Switch units in FY18

good to hear

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Hmm, not really sure if there's demand for such a high number. It's selling out now but I don't feel like it's on everyones mind. But then again I'm in scandinavia so things might be different out there. Still seems to high to me though.

Just look at the games coming: Splatton 2, MHXX, ARMS, Super Mario... and a lot more, that 18 million figure is granted.

34 years playing games.

is possible sell 18 M, Nintendo will release MHXX, DQ X & XI, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey and possibly other Great Game (Announced at E3) Like Smash/Animal Crossing or Pokemon. If Nintendo cuts Switch´s price to $249 is more possible.

A bit of interesting background on what Nintendo plans are to do about meeting demand. A bit of a surprising number considering Nintendo only expects to sell 10 million. But I'm sure that number was set to not have another Wii U first year prediction embarrasment.

Exactly.  They can adjust their target up at any time, when they have a clearer picture of how things go after ARMS/ Splatoon this summer.  You can't adjust your target down, though.  So 10 million set in April was extremely conservative, and they appeared fairly confident even seven weeks into the Switch's release, that 10 million was going to be easy to outdo.

Still think PS4 will win though.

With the current line up and pokemon stars might come out before fy ends with one more huge title, switch could of sold (i mean sell thru) another 20mil imo. But yes ps4 will win. Just goes to show you though that switch has huge potiential as ps4 is literally the ceiling in sales (with only ps2/wii/ds being comparable)

The system seems to be getting most of the big sellers a lot earlier then past Nintendo consoles so I expect it's sales to be more front loaded. It makes sense to produce this much.

Told you the launch games were fine.

But, but it's basically just Zelda .

OT: I hope Nintendo can ride this new wave of success. Go, go Mario.

I just, I literally don't think Nintendo needs to release Pokemon on Switch this year, even if it's ready.  They don't need that many AAA games so quickly.  They can't keep up with demand as it is right now.  Mario and Splatoon will make the supply situation even worse, even with the production increase.  They can release Pokemon next Spring, give people a chance to play all of these other games.  We still don't even know what they're announcing at E3, other than Mario Rabbids RPG.
