That's surprisingly accurate

Microsoft should get some credit for making Steam popular.  If GFWL hadn't been one of the worst experiences in the history of gaming, who knows what might have happened?

Why should they? valve was a success before GFWL was released, FIVE YEARS after steam, to be exact, so why in the world would anyone in any way credit Microsoft for valves success? it's a stretch and a stupid one at that.

GFWL was such a colossal failure that in it's final days developers that had used it proudly announced patches that would remove it. That's on Microsoft, and is a demonstration of how poorly they represent the PC gaming market.

If ANY company should get any credit, it would be IGN's GameSpy software, which was the forerunner for both Steam and Xbox Live.

That was a joke ...

MS = PC

Sony = Console

Nintendo = Handheld.

This is where each belong now am i right?. And yes i am drunk, and im sure i might of had more to add to this topic of discussion, but its all gone out of my head now and the only thing i remember of the thought i originally had is whats up above :-/ .....

PC = High end graphics
Sony = great games on your TV
Nintendo = great games on the go

Microsoft may as well be ganon because it sticks around no matter how many times it loses, but never wins.

You made me laugh so much, this is gold. It's funny because it's true.

I could add another thing: Like Ganon was "winning" in the beginning of Breath of the Wild and Wind Waker, Microsoft was winning during the seventh gen, but ultimately ended losing, like Link prevailed in the very end of those games.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Ganon wasn't winning, he was being bitchslapped, for 100 years, by a girl.

Nintendo = hybrid: not quite a handheld, not quite a console.

I thought the same until I bought one. When I am playing it on the tv with the pro controller it certianly feels like a full fledged console, but when I take it of the dock it feels like a deluxe handheld.

I think the reason it seems like a handheld is because when playing it as a handheld it is hands down the best handheld ever, where as playing it as a console it is "a normal nintendo console".

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Well, he managed to destroy almost everything, so...

For me, I just love the fact that transitioning between handheld and console is so seamless. That long commute in the morning doesn't mean you have to stop playing the game you're currently really into.

So a lot like Microsoft then :P

Look at all the studios and franchises they bought and ruined.

It's official, PC, PlayStation, Switch is the holy trinity, the Triforce, and Microsoft is Ganon, the guy PC, PlayStation and Switch always beat.

I know Valve is giving a lot of credit for making Pc gaming more mainstream etc.

But MS has its place too, after all if it wasnt for the work MS done before hand for PC gaming the most likely wouldnt even be a Valve.

This isn't true at all, at best you can credit them for DirectX, but in the early days of PC gaming and when valve initially established Steam, many games used PowerVR, Glide, OpenGL and software rendering, to this very day a large portion of games utilize openGL over DirectX

DirectX was a BIG progress for PC gaming. It was soooo much more than just the Direct3D part you are comparing to other graphic interfaces like PowerVR, Glide and OpenGL.

Thanks to DirectSound and DirectMusic game developers didn't have to worry anymore about considering every popular sound card/chip and their settings (memory address, IRQ, DMA) and worry about compatibility to future sound chips.

The same goes for input devices (DirectInput + XInput), network settings for local multiplayer games (DirectPlay), media files (Direct MediaX + DirectShow)...

And as much as I loved my first Voodoo card with 3dfx chip (Day 1 buy)... there weren't many games that took full advantage of the Glide API, it was often an afterthought delivered by patch. PowerVR support was even worse.

And there aren't very much OpenGL games for PCs that didn't also support Direct3D or that even run better with OpenGL than with Direct3D.

id Software prefered OpenGL, but outside of games using their engines OpenGL never got very popular for PC games. But it was a very good option for devices and OS without DirectX-support.
