Forums - Sony Discussion - PS Plus Reaches 26.4 million Subscribers As Of March 31 2017

During Sony’s Investor Relations Day 2017 in Tokyo, Sony Interactive Entertainment Deputy President Tsuyoshi Kodera explained the strategy for the Game & Network Services segment of the business.

First of all, Kodera-san reviewed the performance in fiscal year 2016, mentioning that the growth and development of the PS4 ecosystem was “highly successful,” including the continued innovation brought with the launch of PS4 pro and the successful release of PlayStation VR.

Moving on to the strategy for the current fiscal year, Kodera-san expressed the intention to “Retain and expand PlayStation engagement,” and “increase business opportunities and revenue.”

The plan involves maximizing profit from the PS4 ecosystem during its previously mentioned “harvest” period, further expanding PlayStation VR as a game and entertainment medium, incubating a new content ecosystem for the platform, and developing a new audience through mobile releases in Japan and Asia.

Interestingly, we also learn that PlayStation Plus had 26.4 million paying subscribers at the end of fiscal year 2016 (March 31st, 2017), out of over 70 million monthly active users.

Sony plans to further grow these numbers, also enhancing the game line-up with launches like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Gran Turismo Sport.

On the PlayStation VR front, Sony plans to expand the headset’s market as both a game and entertainment medium. Among other things, they expect to enhance the games lineup and PS4 Pro compatibility. On top of that, they intend to expand non-game VR content like movies and music and take on location-based entertainment as a new challenge.

On the mobile front, Sony Interactive Entertainment plans to leverage its IPs and know-how in game development with the ForwardWorks label, and to cultivate a close relationship with third party publishers and developers.

The aim is to build a title catalog with a wide range of genres and developing original IPs, on top of launching collaborations with other branches of the Sony group.

In conclusion, the company expects to further grow the PS4 business in the current fiscal year, including PlayStation VR. Improvements in network revenues are also expected.

Well, luckily, the Playstation ecosystem caters for people who like the singleplayer experience with great games like TLOU, RAC, UC4, Horizon with more to come. Other companies don't give you much of a choice.

I mean... just wait till the Nintendo Subscriber numbers come out if you want to throw shade. It'll be a lot easier to turn that news into a negative, but I expect you won't want to there. This is the highest subscribers to this kind of service ever.

Excellent number of subcribers and growth, that's a huge amount of revenue.

To put the increase in perspective. MS increased MAU of Xbox Silver/Gold, for Xbox,PC, and mobile by about 6m yoy.

Sony increased paying PS plus customers for pretty much just PS4 by about 6m yoy.

44% of all PS4's shipped. not bad. i doubt it will keep that ratio moving forward but we could see PS+ subscribers reaching 35 million at some point. huge numbers for Sony. now keep improving those PS+ games

Really nice to see that they are now calling it an ecosystem instead of a platform. It shows they intend to contiue to expand the business to new areas, and absolutely love the thought of that. I am glad they have their focus on PSVR and PlayStation Vue. Both of these are major parts of the further expansion of the brand.

I hope they continue to keep strong support of the core community, but also start to branch out on some more casual expereince. The late life casual stuff as the console price drops has always been my favorite content from them.

Only thing I don't like is the mobile stuff, but hopefully it is used as an avenue to drive people to PlayStation. It is a massive market to basically advertise to, but it is not a place of sustainable growth. PlayStation Hardware, PlayStation OS, PlayStation Store, PlayStation Network, and PlayStation Services, is where they can achieve continuos growth, and getting people into and engaged in that ecosystem is key.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

The word "ecosystem" has been thrown around for several years.

I was expecting higher numbers. I thought more gaming customers would want online and pay for it.

That's a good thing, i would think. This means that the singleplayer experience is still going strong .
