Considering the size of the team and the fact everyone else submitted only one prediction please chose just one of the two, if you firmly believe they are working on 2 games then think in which order they will be shown at E3 and say the one you think will come first so I'll take that one as your prediction

I think DKR2 gets shown and released first. You can count that as my primary prediction.



I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

And before using the "Nintendo did Zelda in one try" argument. No they didn't! Nintendo worked with Retro studios, who had been developing pacing in large scale 3D games for a decade and a half, and had been working on open world design for at least a decade. In addition, the Zelda team had always been working on elements that work well within an open world environment. Lastly, the Zelda team developed Link Between Worlds, released in 2013, as a bit of a prototype for the Zelda universe, as well as a Zelda-1 based open world prototype. Throw on top of everything that the Breath of the Wild design team is one of the most talented and experienced video game design teams in history, and were incredibly detailed in their research and prototyping.

Most of the original Metroid Prime staff has left and are largely spread out between Warner Bros, Activision/Blizzard, Valve, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, and Sucker Punch. Current Retro Studios staff is largely young in the industry, and have all their familiarity with the two DKC clones, which is all they released in the last decade. I don't think Retro Studios has experience or staff capacity to develop an open world game. Their whole purpose is to update old ideas.

If they're doing something with the Metroid license, don't expect an open world game, expect a 2D Metroid title with some elements from the latest DKC title they released. That would be the only logical direction for them with that franchise. Next, they could potentially be doing a Kart racing game, Diddy Kong Racing?

Considering you talk about DKR in your post I'm positive you're aware that Retro worked on Mario Kart 7, hence having some experience in 3D game development, moreover most of the environment/characters in DKTF are 3D even if the game is only 2D. Of course this isn't nearly enough to say they are capable of making a full fledged 3D game but you must keep in mind that when the industry shifted towards 3D in the 90s nobody had 3D modelling experience and yet they managed to create some of the most praised videogames of all time (FFVII and Ocarina of Time come to mind). That beeing said do you think that Nintendo would hire people that had never experienced 3D development to work at Retro Studios, the Development team that as reported multiple times is the one that has the highest salary for developers in all of Nintendo ?

There's a difference between making a 3D game, and making an open-world game like Breath of the Wild, Nintendo's largest production in its history, and Retro studios is significantly smaller than the EAD teams, they require outside assistance to complete their projects. In other words, they're far too small to make an open-world Metroid to any good kind of standard. Other teams would be better suited.

Why does Retro Studios exist? As stated, they're a small studio, but the name "Retro Studios" implies that they're intended for older style game designs, such as DKC.

As has been pointed out, even if it were years ago now, they had some design experience in race car tracks. The most successful spinoff to DKC is Diddy Kong Racing. It's also an older style game that is popular, that is their next likely step, OR a more 2D style Metroid based around their learnings from DKC.
