Mad Catz shuts down after months of financial woes

Troubled hardware maker used up its ninth life

Mad Catz, Inc. has filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy in the United States. As of March 30, the company has shut down and begun to sell off its assets, with all proceeds going straight to lenders.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy differs from chapter 11 bankruptcy in a major way: It means that Mad Catz does not currently intend to reorganize, filing instead for liquidation and vacating its board of directors and officers.

Best-known for its gaming hardware and peripherals, Mad Catz’s exit from the industry follows several months of financial trouble. Poor Rock Band 4 sales in late 2015 rocked Mad Catz, after it hedged its bets by co-publishing and designing instruments for the game. The company told investors that it needed Rock Band 4 to succeed in order to stabilize itself; that didn’t happen, and the company posted huge losses in the quarter after its release.

In February 2016, Mad Catz’s CEO and chairman both resigned, and the company laid off nearly 37 percent of employees. Leading up to the bankruptcy filing, efforts to increase shareholder value failed on a public level; we reported in January that Mad Catz’s stock prices had plummeted, and the company was at risk of being removed from the New York Stock Exchange.

The board of directors voted to cease operations following these failed moves to boost profits. Going bankrupt is an unfortunate, if not unexpected ending for the company, as well as hardware heads who’d collected Mad Catz’s controllers, flight sticks and other products since it opened in 1989.

Don't think I've ever bought a Mad Catz product but I've seen them about. Hopefully the staff will land on their feet. Some of the products look really nice.

Anything worth looking out for with heavy discounts?

It can't be all bad. Didn't they do some decent arcade sticks and what about that mojo console or whatever it was called. That might be worth a look if very heavily discounted.

Its been ages since I owned something made by mad catz, they also made a really weird android console and some crazy looking mouses and headsets, no suprise they didn't manage to keep going from what i've seen but they have been around for ages man!

A lot of people really liked their fight sticks but seemingly not enough. I have not used Mad Catz since Gamecube maybe and well the quality was terrible. In a weird way this is kinda sad to me as it just shows me I am getting that much older and another part of gaming that was always there is now gone.

This news conflicts me. On one hand it's sad to hear that any company has to file for bankruptcy and everything that follows.

On the other hand, mad catz fucked me over with their shitty rock band peripherals. Sucks that people will lose their job over this regardless.

They haven't released anything relevant in quite a while. There is something distinctly PS2 Era about them. In fact they were solid alternatives for the awful PS2 controller. Thats all I ever think I got from them.

This controller was this shit.

RIP.

I bought at least 2 gamepads and a mouse from them some years ago. The RAT5 was the last mouse I bought from them back in 2014.
