I went to a decent public school, and i can assure you they do have classes for the real world. Money management, business, health, etc. Problem is some people prioritize music classes and/or AP classes instead.

I took a personal money management class, and it was really useful. It helped me learn about a lot of things that Iwill soon start to deal with.

I agree, they should give a general synopsis of major religions and the history, but this shouldn't be more than a semester of classes unless the future ones are electives. You wanna learn religion, churches make Millions (Some billions) each day. They will teach you.

Why are we dedicating regular classes to teaching what is to many families is fantasy based studies in public schools

One area that I think we need to think about that will be of great benefit is the study of Philosophy at all ages, this would also bring in discussions around religions, Science, Morals, Ways of thinking, that would be of great benefit to Children as they grow and try to analyse the World around them

I'm taking a class about philosophy of religion.

Your move.

Better than no Philosophy I guess, unless it is taught only within a religious point of view, then it would have little benefit in a public school setting

Philosophy obviously covers far more material than that, and narrowing it's scope would not be as beneficial to children, but as an individual choice I guess it's ok, not ideal

I like the concept of teaching kids about some of the basics of a range of religions, without judging the worth or merits of those religions. But I just think the practicalities and sensitivities and in many cases the animosities of it might be too hard to deal with.

It's optional here and most schools don't do it. Mostly, and sadly, because while many religions are represented in the student population, school boards are mostly made up of Christian parents and / or secular parents, and while the christian parents would mostly be very in favour of a bible in schools programme, when another religious group wants to offer a parallel class for kids of that religion the school board then decides to can the religion in schools thing all together, and the secular parents on the boards are more than happy to axe those programmes. Meanwhile possibly a majority of parents in a school would be happy for a religious programme to exist, so long as their religion is included in a non-biased way.

End result and path of least harm is to simply not have any religious classes in public schools.

Religions shouldn't be taught in public schools. This is a secular state.

Is this your opinion for all classes, or for non-elective classes only?

How old are the kids being taught and are they being shown the clip in the OP?
If it's

The video isn't too bad, even if it just touches on the positive stuff. Though, I suppose most would. Of course, I only have a problem with it if this is the only video they are showing and aren't including ones on all religions, like Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Mormons, etc. If the class is spending most of its time on Islam, then that's not ok.

I agree they should however teach more about the physical world. It's about time that children understand why their drinking water comes from Canada  (in some states) and what the (biological and environmental) concequences are of the fastfood diet. Actually they should teach a lot of environmental issues to children and what causes them.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar
