Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Witcher 3 Was A Huge Commercial Success, But Cyberpunk 2077 Can Be A Much Bigger One

cyberpunk / future societies is a more popular genre than fantasy? what is the developer/producer over there smoking?

There are virtually no fictional genres more popular than fantasy/magic (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Game of Thrones, etc. etc. etc.)

seems to be a little early wishful thinking here. a Cyberpunk theme if anything is fairly niche (although I personally think its a cool concept).

yeah, that was a dumb statement by them. future-dystopian society stuff is vastly more niche than the fantasy genre at this point in time.

I will assume its just PR talk to try and make it sound like Cyberpunk 2077 will be an automatic success

random: isn't 2077 around the time in the Fallout series that the great bombs fell and the world died? just popped in my brain haha, kind of ironic this game shares that year

I'm really looking forward this game. I hope it ends being as good as The Witcher 3.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

I honestly don't think so. Unless there's godly advertising and huge hype, The Witcher 3 will probably stand as their most successful game ever

Either way, I hope they do well

Doubt it. Cyberpunk isn't that popular and this is a new franchise.

No way it's going to outsell TW3, not even close.

Yeah, that was a ridiculous statement.

And they've also shown nothing to convince me or anyone that their game is doing anything more than hitting the lowest targets with its setting.  A distopic future mega city with a glistening upper market/wealthy district and a lower city slum, conflicts between humans and AI, over agressive police and corporate sponsored cops, etc etc.  Their teaser could have been from literally any cyberpunk work ever.

And this matters because the cornerstone of Witcher 3's success is its sense of identity and quality writing.  The guy talks about how restrictive that foundation was but it's what made the Witcher special.  Cyberpunk 2077 has yet to show any of that sense of identity.  But then, it is also yet to show a single in game screenshot either.

Yeah that's what I thought lol, like you said above Game of Thrones and Harry Potter are huge right now. Then Skyrim, Witcher  3 and BotW all fantasy. I can only like think off maybe Blade Runner or something that's like Dystopian

The massive success of TW3 has ballooned CDPR to superstat status. I wouldnt be surprised to see their next game sell even better, regardless of setting.

We'll see. I wish them great success again, but I suspect it won't be bigger than The Witcher 3.

I wish them success but I don´t know.
I know I will not buy Cyberpunk on day 1. I´m way more into fantasy than sci fi and it´s sub genres.
