As for switch it doesnt need to sell combine 3ds+wiiu lifetime or there lifetime divided by half.

To be successful it just needs to sell a good amount and make money for the company with great output on software.

Wii install base was merely 12mil vs ps1+2 install base (20mil around each) and despite that the software for many games were beyond crazy (games were selling 2/3/4/ even 5mil+ copies

Switch/ps4/etc doesnt need to sell X amounts to be successful. A console that sells 20mil could be more successful than one that sells 75mil for ex.

Look at past handhelds/home consoles. Comparisons are great but its not everything.

Ps4 could stop selling right now and be 100x more successful than the ps3 despite a 60mil vs 90mil userbase.

What consoles have sold 20m and been successful? Every console around that mark has been an abject failure.

I was making a point. Would you rather have a OG Xbox/Gamecube levels of profits (20mil) or have a huge loss ps3 levels (despite that outselling almost every hardware thats not from sony)

If switch sells 10mil in japan lifetime and sells a ton of software with hardly and losses and alot of profits its a win.

OG Xbox lost tonnes of money for Microsoft which is why they discontinued it before 360 had even released.

Gamecube caused Nintendo to completely change their home console strategy after it sold so poorly.

I understand the point you're making (a profitable, niche console can be "successful") but in reality it has never worked out that way. If it did, Vita and WiiU would be "successful" because the former makes plenty of third-party licencing money from indies and Japanese devs while the latter makes plenty of money from amiibo and first party stuff.

But both are failures.

Yeah im saying wrong but you get it. Its not impossible. I just dont get why some people (not from here only) think switch needs to sell X amount (mostly 3ds+wiiu combined).

I dont think nintendo will be mad if the thing sells 40mil+ for ex. Its too early to tell. I have a prediction that nintendo will have a 3ds successor soon (a year or 2) that is basically a switch but portable/tabletop only..... But that could be too bold even for me lmao

The dedicated market in general has been on the decline lately. I think it's absurd to expect 3DS + Wii U sales from Switch at this stage. If it gets it, great, but I wouldn't count on it.

There have been precious few consoles in recent years selling mid-range like you're describing. They're either huge (DS/PS2); enough to be a success (Wii/360/PS3/PSP) or a disaster (Wii U/Vita/GC/Xbox). PS4 and 3DS seem to be heading to 70-80m+ which I'd lump with the Wii/360 group.

I'm not sure how I'd classify a console that sold 40-50m. XB1 might finish around that and possibly Switch too. It's what SNES sold, and that was a success, but it was also 27 years ago and the market has changed substantially since then.

That milestone is crazy (wiiu+3ds). In terms of tiers for the companies i say most successful would be...

PS2-DS (i dont kno which was the bigger $$$)

Wii (only because of the 1st party $$$)

PS1-GB/GBC

Those are the top 5 with ps4 easily going to be in the top 3 at this point. (Dunno where itll end yet)

After that i guess it would be psp-nes-snes-gba.

Im hoping switch will be in that group. X1 still an unknown factor. I think ita around 30mil by now lol

Switch 330k, 3DS 374k.

Good, not great start then?

It did beat PS4's 309k sold within the same time frame so...

3DS has sold over 5 times more than PS4 in Japan, so I don't think beating PS4 (or Wii U for that matter) in Japan is a good benchmark.

My point still stands that it is bad first week. That number is pretty low

And how ports tend to send in Japan? For example Tales of Zestiria port on PS4 sold 5k, and that was a discounted price. Ports always sell bad, and specially if they're premium prices and lazy quality. This port sold fine for what is it. And sell-through isn't bad either for a launch title.

You should know very well using Tales of Zestiria is a bad example and you should know the history of that game. It has a bad reputation and a lot of Tales of fans didn't like it.
I am sorry but it seems you using Tales of Zestiria  as an example is strething it and nitpicking.

Since you are using that then might as well:
[PSV] Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention - (Nippon Ichi Software) - 22,453 / NEW
[PSV] Disgaea 4 Return (NIS, 01/30/14) – 33,749 (New)

[PSV] Atelier Totori Plus: The Adventurer of Arland (Gust, 11/29/12) – 27,651

They sold well in proportion on their counter parts.

With the bold you just prove my point. While I don't expect it to sell 100K first week but selling 25k FW and it is  a Dragon Quest game and including 2 games at a steal price then I will say it sold bad first week. Let me lowered it down my initial expectation just to be fair. It could have easily sold 40K  and I can say it is a Good First week.

What was the price of the 3DS and the PS4 when it first launched in Japan?

Agreed. This is Nintendo's only HW for the 9th gen (well, unless it fails in the next year or two and they immediately put out another console, the first without Iwata's oversight), and was made to appeal to casual and HH gamers, so Nintendo is going to be looking to at least match the 3DS' sales.
