Forums - Gaming Discussion - The switch launch feels very quiet...

Gotta be honest, I get the impression that most of the people talking about some post-zelda Switch boredom usually strike me as people who don't actually own the Switch lol

Besides, the majority of early adopters are enthusiasts who know exactly what they're getting. Despite my initial skepticism (such as my regretful "Is this the weakest launch lineup ever?" thread haha) the Switch has easily been one of the most enjoyable early console experiences I've had. I also bought the PS4 at launch, for instance, and I seem to recall AC IV being just about the only game I played for nearly a year; the vast majority of consoles take quite a while to establish themselves and really justify their existence.

The Switch has done an excellent job in that so far.

People tend to forget PS4 had a way worse launch lineup where all titles were cross gens ports being knack and killzone the only new games.

That's typical of most consoles really. I recall Xbox1 pretty much only had that one mediocre Roman title ("Rise" or something, I forget) for quite some time.

The industry was not particularly eager to move on from the previous gen which had sold very, very well. It was quite some time before we started seeing games that actually took advantage of the new hardware.

Yeah, I played 160 hours on the Switch in just the first month, which is way better than any of the eighth-gen consoles I have.

I got a 3DS in December 2011, and I didn't reach 160 hours until 18 months later in June 2013 with Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

I got a Wii U in August 2013 for Pikmin 3, and it took 9 months until Mario Kart 8 to reach 160 hours for the Wii U.

I got a PS4 in December 2014, and I still don't have that much playtime on it, though Persona 5 might change that.

So, for me, no console has ever become "worth it" faster than the Switch.

Ah yeah, I guess that was just my personal bias as I'm not really into racing games and Find the latest Dead Risings to be disappointing... I prefer that overly silly, comical approach of the early titles.

They have had a new forza EVERY year though. They also had one in 2012, AND 2011.

I don't know how to reply to this.

Interestingly, the PS4 didn't get its big first party title post-launch until July 2014 with TLoU Remastered. The PS4 apparently was able to hold momentum through hype from its reveal, E3 2013 and a steady diet of decent third party titles, whether they were remastered or not. I also don't want to forget that the PS4 also built on promises of big games such as The Last Guardian, Uncharted 4, FFXV, KH3, Shenmue III, FFVIIRe, Horizon, etc. It took a while for some of those games to come out and there are a few that are still in development with most of us are dying to hopefully know more of. Not saying it's wrong to do that, but it worked out because gamers obviously bought in (literally and figuratively). And I'm not gonna poo-poo on the PS4's success because, good on them. I have one myself, but I'm glad I waited as it would be cheaper and more games (though the price cuts aren't as low as people say for older games :P).

Im not usually one for what-ifs, but if Nintendo even had games like FFVIIRe and/or KH3 along with stuff like GTAV or something to go along with their first party titles for Switch, I would bet most of us here wouldn't say, "we'll see how interest keeps up post-launch and post-first year or so." We wouldn't question much about their first year, which is already pretty damn good if you ask me. The highest acclaimed, non-remaster game this gen in Zelda, then you got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which should be fine, ARMS, Splatoon 2 which is showing incredible COMG numbers so far, FE Warriors, Super Mario Odyssey (which I find it hard to believe it will do anything less than it's predecessors or anything less than great tbh), and then, if things work out, Xenoblade 2. Not a lot of consoles can claim to have that kind of first party support in the first year. Then you have Fire Emblem 2018, with the franchise coming to its own as a B-tier Nintendo franchise, and potentially more.

Those are my thoughts, though maybe I'm wrong with that anaylsis..

So far only Zelda and Mario kart. Just wait till Metroid and Mario hit

Valid concerns. These are the moments and subtleties that have made or broken the tides of the industry's past. I wouldn't worry too much though unless this happens alongside the stock availability reversing. This decline you notice is just among those already purchased. The hype is still real for those families who haven't been able to get a Switch and the Holiday will kick the hype up again, and of those purchased many are still waiting for stock or personal income to buy all the accessories and components to create their ideal setup. As these items begin to take shape you will see more and more consoles in circulation: at parties, in lobbies and waiting areas, public venues, and potentially new types of tournaments and other cultural events surrounding Switch play. These situations and thus demand will further increase once the 3DS end of life begins the influx of mobile games to the Switch library.

The hype of this system is not limited to the validations that we see with more traditional platforms and there are plenty of market and cultural stages coming up to fuel sales.
