Forums - Politics Discussion - More Americans died in Chicago than in the Iraq & Afghanistan wars combined

To me this is not simply a gun control issue.

I been to Chicago, the place is segregated and full of extreme levels of passive racism and classism.

Chicago is run by Democratic mayors for decades. As a consequence it is one of the most corrupt cities in the US.

Isn't Detroit worse? Damn Chicago is crazy.

Ahh, the love hate relationship I have with my city.. Ironically I live in one of the safest towns in the nation which is not far outside Chicago (south west burbs). Most of this crime is on our south side. Gangs n' such.. Basically, you probably won't catch me going to a home White Sox game anytime soon - and if I do, I won't be hanging around the area long after the game..

Yeah, it's a shame that so many people are writing off the entire city of Chicago because of shootings that mostly occur in the south and west sides.  Even Comiskey/Guaranteed Rate Field is a good area.

Many smaller cities have higher crime rates, but Chicago is big, so the overall numbers are the highest.

Maybe that is the reason that a flight to Chicago is half the price of a flight to Denver from Europe.

...this thread also changed my mind, i'm not going over Chicago

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Chicago overall isn't really the issue either, it's just a part of Chicago.

If you look at only intentional murders, the US averages 3.9 murders per 100,000 people, Germany  averages about 0.9 per 100,000, roughly 12,250 in the US per year vs. 716 in Germany per year.  There were more murders in Chicago last year than in all of Germany for the same period. The "No Go" zones in Europe are overblown, roughly the equivalant of walking through a slum or ghetto in the US but generally with fewer muggings.

Chicago's murder rate is 15.65 per 100,000. My city is roughly 11.5, Los Angeles is currently at 6 per 100,000 down from 35.2 per 100,000 in 1980.

New Orleans had a murder rate of 57.6 per 100,000 recently. St. Louis and Detroit's murder rates are 50 per 100,000. Baltimore is at 49 per 100,000.

People like to focus on Chicago since it's a "no gun zone" and the sheer overall numbers, but of course that's like living in a dry county and being able to drive 10 minutes to buy beer in the neighboring county. Kinda pointless.

I knew if I just kept reading the posts that somebody would finally say something intellectual and right on point, and ultimately what you said is correct.

It's pretty ironic considering how Trump lambasted Sweden for its problems with crime when the United States is much worse off.

But couldn't you just spin this with the US population percent VS one countries percent. It would not look good either. US is 3rd on population. So they would have a higher death/murder rate from crimes VS other countries. Except for China and India. Now if someone got death/murder rate for China. And the US beats those places. Than that's more telling. Like what areas did they compare it to? Do these places have a simliar population count to Chicago?

No, they wouldn't. Murder rate is not the same as murder numbers. The US has a higher murder rate than Sweden.
