Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft shot themselves in foot with Minecraft, right?

Yeeeah no. Minecraft is still strong, they definitely made at least 1B out of it already between the sales/new platforms it released on and Story mode/merchandise ...

Microsoft didnt survive a creative industry by creating the best content outside of online. They bought what was hot and truthfully its worked for them and kept them competitive. Im sure they are working on a Minecraft two or are plotting some way to invest in the product.

LOL they are rich because Windows

Despite the fact they make billions in video games, microsoft office, servers, ect.

Yeah, mostly because outside of online their highest selling products were ip acquisitions. The Kinect was also purchased.

I'm pretty sure the Wiimote was purchased as well. There's no shame in it.

Minecraft is easily making them profit, if the game starts doing badly then they could resell it.

I doubt they regret it. This is a ridiculously popular IP. They're almost definitely gonna do more with it in the future too.
I bet there'll be a Minecraft 2. And theme parks, and merchandise, and future spinoffs. Etc etc.

So? Sometimes it is much easier to buy a product out than make a product.

Yeah, if you call earning truckloads of cash shooting yourself in the foot, then sure!

Minecraft is still selling like crazy. You don't hear too much about it because it's mainly digital and we don't have any numbers because it doesn't rely on steam or any other platform. But it is available on any device you could possibly imagine and just like GTA, it just can't stop selling. Really big factor is the mobile market. It sold nearly 50 million copies on Android alone and right now sits at number 2 of the game charts. I think it looks quite similar on iOS but I can't check right now. Then there are in-app purchases. Skin-pack with Mario = instant cash for example.

Don't you worry, Minecraft is a license to print money.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Sony and Nintendo were headed in that direction, no different than motion gaming and the switch but it could happen. Do you have any articles on this?

you seem to be in another reality. Minecraft purchase price seemed insanely high to me at the time, but the numbers since its purchase have made it seem like a bargain.

back in 2014 when they bought it, minecraft was at roughly 50-55 million copies sold (on all platforms). Last year it passed 100 million
