Forums - Gaming Discussion - Well well, Hideo Baba (Tales of guy) now works at Square Enix.! Get's his own studio and developing a new IP - What did he do to deserve that?

He doesn't deserve this. Everything he did with the Tales of series is mediocre. The only good thing to come out of him is Graces.

PS: This is great news for the Tales of franchise!

reception of the Tales has been dropping since Xillia 2 and following that whole death threat to a VA thing, he picked a good time to leave..

Well, Tales of Berseria is good.

I can confirm this. Berseria is probably the best Tales of game since Vesperia/Graces. It has some issues but it's way better than Xillia 1/2 and Zestiria.

Square Enix is very lucky to have him. Hideo knows how to release full games quickly. When I mean full games I mean that the DLCs are purely cosmetic.

CPU: Ryzen 7950X
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5

Did he leaved just after the best instalment in the series launched ?
Well good luck anyway

First of all I'm going to highlight the bad stuff. It has the same uninspired dungeons and the same uninspired enemy designs that Xillia/Zestiria had.

The story and characters is what makes it interesting. The tone is darker and the protagonist is an anti-hero (basically like Yuri but even better), it's different from all the tales of games before. It's a nice change.

The battle system is really good. It doesn't have that link system bullshit from Xillia or the armatization from Zestiria. Instead it has the break soul system! It's easy to understand but I suck at explaining it, the important thing is that it doesn't hinder the multiplayer experience (really important to me since I play these kind of games with my friends). The equipment system is a lot better, it has elements from Zestiria and Vesperia but it doesn't suck (like it did in Zestiria).

I might have exaggerated but I find it better than Xillia/2 and Zestiria. It still can't reach the bar that Vesperia or Graces set but it's a good Tales of game.

Happy for him. Personally enjoyed the Tales of games he produced and helped bring to the west. Hope he finds success with his new team.

I will not hate a person because of one game. I don't know what happen with the VA thing but if he can deliver a great game after this and learning from the mistakes that he had then I am fine with it.

Yeah, tales hasn't been great since. Fingers crossed that whoever stays in the helm at Namco makes a better job.

My hint to them is: Stick to the combat system that made the series great (symphonia/abyss/vesperia).

Eh symphonia combat blows, I only played it recently mind you but it was unresponsive and dull. I haven't played the other two you mentioned, I do own them but haven't gotten around to playing them. I've watched my GF play lots of Berseria and tbh it looks pretty good compared to Zesteria. I think the main thing they need to do is get a new engine, make the enviroments less bland and tone down of the talking cutscences.

That is not gonna bring back the fandom. Tales of had something that made it different from the competition and that was the 2D perspective action combat system. Every big sucess of the series used that combat system.

The current Tales of series is simply yet another JRPG. There is nothing that makes it different from Star ocean for example, except the setting. There is nothing special about Tales, and that is the problem. They have also held on to skits, wich were great when introduced but nowadays we have seamless conversations while gameplay continues. They even have some of that in the game but still stick to the system that makes you stop the game to watch 2D portraits talk to each other. That doesn't work anymore.

The way to regain the trust of the fandom is to show them something they know they like. Wet noodles don't work anymore.

Meh Tales games have been painfully mediocre and worse for years now so I cannot get excited for anything he does.
