Forums - Gaming Discussion - Scorpio: 'Most powerful never wins' law remains intact?

Has the law been broken?

Yes. PS4 beat XB1. 81 53.64%

No. PS4 beat Scorpio. 70 46.36%

Total:151

I never really understood that theory actually. I owned original xbox, PS2, and gamecube and several games cross platform. The PS2 game was always the better functioning/looking graphically version over the Xbox or gamecube version yet it was the weakest. So doesn't it really just matter what console it was developed for?

Name a PS1 game that looks better than Perfect Dark (And this isn't the best looking N64 game either, so I can move the goal post if you wish.):

What was the best looking? I always thought Perfect Dark was considered the best

Conker. It had altered the Microcode so it could have multiple light sources, Surround Sound, high quality backdrops and some great animations and overall was probably graphically superior.

Other games like Majoras mask had some good texture work and things like motion blur.

I was wrong, theres no need to be condescending about it geez, facts speak for themselves.

The Nintendo 64 could have higher poly counts than the PS1.
Nintendo 64 texture quality could be vastly superior to the PS1 and actually have texture filtering.

Carts, despite having their draw backs also has multiple advantages.
Carts can transfer data on the fly much faster, much more responsively than Optical Disc storage. - Eliminating load times and allowing for assets to be streamed on the fly, saving RAM.
Carts are also more durable and longer lasting, many discs will eventually suffer from Disc Rot.

The fact is, regardless of how you dance around the issue and deny facts, the Nintendo 64 was not only technically superior, it was superior in the real world and the games literally prove it. You have no argument.

Ehh I wouldnt say Perfect Dark is a good example, but I get your point :P

So... If it's not a good example are you suggesting there are Playstation 1 games that exceed it?

I also stated I am happy to provide better/other examples. ;)

Looks to be like the PS4 winning has been the outlier in these past 4 generations
PS1, despite being inferior to the N64, beat the crap out of it.
PS2 beat the crap out of the Xbox and GameCube.
The Wii and DS, respectively, came out on top last Gen against it's graphically superior competitors.
Now we move to this generation where the 3DS has destroyed the Vita. The PS4 is the one exception to the rule, and I really don't think that had anything to do with it being just a teeny, tiny bit more powerful than the Xbox One.
I think the main reason it did it, other than them riding and continuing the late generation momentum they captured with the PS3, was because of Sony's ability to capitalize on that DISASTROUS first reveal of the Xbox One back in 2013 right before E3. Gamers everywhere, both dedicated and casual, were so disgusted by the reveal that Sony could have had an average "C+" reveal for the PS4, and they still would have absolutely loved it, because unless Sony was doing the exact same thing, anything in comparison was going to MUCH preferred of the original Xbox One design and idea.
So much of those sales in the first year or year in a half of both system's life cycles were Microsoft suffering and recovering from the damage that initial reveal did to them, while Sony reaped the benefits.

Scorpio could outsell the pro but i doubt it. By the time it releases the ps4 pro will have a price effectively ruining the Scorpios chance of winning. PS4 is the more popular console this generation so i cant really see anything changing that.

People will go for the console which multiplayer looks better on it so scorpion might have a chance to beat pro

What can it possibly win? The PS4 is too far ahead of the XB1 for it to make any difference and calling it a next gen console is apparently off the table.

The PS5 Exists.

Content beats power every time. Content is king. The company that offer most content always win.

Hard to say really. (Exclude Wii to Switch)

This is one of the first gens where power wasn't the sole focus at the launch, for XB anyway. Every other console has always pushed for the most power at the time of its launch, even PS3 with all its media capabilities. XB just took the PS3 formula and made it affordable, but made cuts mostly to the power, so you ended up with a "balanced" console. PS clearly focused on the power (also price) and put aside most of the extra media features.

From the start it was a power console vs balanced console. That's like saying who's going to win the drag race, the 400hp stock bling package Mustang or the tuned supercharged 600hp bare bones Mustang? Sure the stock Mustang is more comfortable and can be driven down the highway and has a kick ass stereo system, but it's going to get absolutely smoked in the race. If your looking to build a race car you don't spend money on a stereo system and 24" rims, and if your building a gaming console you don't focus (spend money) on the media capabilities.

PS4 may have won this gen, but to truly say its broken the law/trend would be a stretch. I'd call it an anomaly. (PS4 NEO...)
