Now that I think about it, this is a really great solution. You can use bluetooth with the device and you don't have to be tethered to a console at home to set up online functions, future gameplay sessions, etc. It really makes sense for the switch. Projared did an interview with Reggie, I suggest you check it out. This actually clicked with me after I thought about it.

Why would Switch need to be tethered to a console at home when Switch IS the console and you have it in your hand? That makes no sense.

I'm talking about in relation to other consoles...

It DOES NOT mattee what you say. It will have the capabilities. Just think about it

It's not what I'm saying, it's what Nintendo is saying.

“The smart phone app that we’re creating, that will be part of our online service, we believe is going to be a very compelling part of the overall proposition because that’s how you’ll voice chat, that’s how you’ll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby."

"Online lobby and voice chat

Our new dedicated smart device app will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games─all from your smart device.

A free, limited version of this app will be available for download in summer 2017."

So its the only way to do it. But it isnt available at launch. Hmmm maybe they think we could figure that theres other ways

It doesn't "require" the phone app. Its an added feature if you want to control a friends list or voice chat, etc. If you just jump on to play a game, then you just do that without the phone app. I'm not even sure how you pulled that it is required out of any of the information that has come out so far.

Control a fried list? Do you mean a game lobby? Voice chat etc....

even if that is the case, how does that make this a good thing? So basiclly you need two devices to handle everything online related with the switch? Does that even make sense?

And if its for parental control, then why couldn't that just be implemented on the device itself. Its all just unnecesarily complex.

And I dont know, but there is  a reason this issue is causin as much confusion as it is.

But why does that option even exist? Everything you can do on the phone is easier and faster done with the Switch itself.

That's like adding an option to play with the Switch while the joycons are heated up to 500°C. It's not mandatory, just an option for people who think having 500°C hot Joycons is more convenient.

I mean it is one way to effectively turn Switch into a DS3. You get a second screen handheld to do certain things while leaving your game screen active. Be playing Z:BoTW and also get some social gaming stuff set up and ready for when you switch to MK8. It has its utility, but it needs to be totally optional with all functions able to be used on the Switch itself.

So it already needs you to have a table or something where you can position your smartphone right next to the Switch so it's almost seamless so you can look at....... your frinds list? while playing.

Yeah no, it's not a 3DS. There is no utility gained. And so far the only thing I heard is it "might" be "useful" for "some" "people" but I can't tell you what could be useful about it. Leaving your game screen active while looking at a completely different device is useless.

They have not once said that there is, or will be any other way to do voice chat on the Switch. You don't think that with all the negative press they've gotten over this they would have clarified by now?

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

They want you to think. If the app isnt avail until summer. What could you use before then? The same things that are always avail. They are just trying to talk about new things as to there paid online

If you really think this is the only way there will just be no multiplayer until summer?

As I've said elsewhere, there's a bunch of shit nintendo needs to address, and address clearly, before the console hits store shelves or they're going to run into a launch with people confused about what the hell they're supposed to do and what they need, just like the WiiU.

They tried hard, so hard, on the 12th to be as clear as possible about the controllers and how they're used, but everything else that's come since, online management, subscriptions, how the monthly VC stuff is handled, the mobile app stuff and then the stuff about the grip that comes with the console not being able to charge the joycons, but a grip sold separately will.. it's just a freaking mess.

Come the fuck on Nintendo, don't balls up this launch too

Also, on this:

A free, limited version of this app will be available for download in summer 2017."

I swear to god if they mean the full version of the app has to be purchased separately to use the online stuff for Switch, no gamer, Nintendo fan or not, should accept that, not now, not ever.
