I'm always really skeptical when it comes with new IPs. Definitely interested in fresh new ways designers can create game, but there is always that feeling that it could be not as good as what is shown. First shown in E3 2014, the game looked pretty fun but me being a skeptic, I didn't think much for the game.. but as time went on and as it go closer to the launch date, I was watching Splatoon trailers and all those commericials. Those annoying songs just seem to get stuck in my head everyday! I got pretty excited, which is strange, since those commericials gave me no reason for me to be. Never have I thought that Splatoon would make more excited than games like Smash 4 or Mario Kart. In fact, it's ranked #9 on Leadified's Greatest Games of All time. I thought it would have gone down after a year, but I've played hundreds of hours of that game and I still like it. This brings the question.. will Splatoon 2 surpass it? I think Splatoon will be a great game because it's good, but I'm not sure if it ever will
1. Voice chat: Love it or hate it, Splatoon did not include voice chat probably because of hardware limitations. I'm probably on the minority, but I'm sort of glad there was no voice chat in Splatoon. Other games like CoD being the most notable has a lot of annoying players that can ruin the experience. It's not as simple as just turning voice chat off, because this can ruin the experience for other players and with other Splatooners upset, it can ruin my experience even if I have it off!
2. Resolution: We all know that the Wii U was really lacking in power. Comparable to the PS3 and Xbox 360, Splatoon was still able to run at 60 frames but still looking really nice. Now we fast forward 2 years and Splatoon 2 still looks quite similar. Splatoon 2 does have some new changes but will not have the nice glossy ink texture as seen in the original Wii U version. However, improving the resolution to make Splatoon 2 nicer would come at the cost of preformance which would hurt the experience. If we have comparable displays and preformance, the original will take the prize for this
3. Stage variety: The stages in Splatoon aren't all balanced and some maps definitely are not created with some ranked modes in mind.. I'm looking at you Salt Spray Rig. However, I must say that the variety in these stages are really good. I've wondered if adding the fans in Ancho V Games or conveyer belts would make it a bit unfair or a hassle to play on, but these stages were designed very well with these different elements requiring people to possibly change their playstyle for different maps. Splatoon 2 will no doubt have new maps but I feel they would look too much of the same as the originals
4. Music: I must say, the music in Splatoon is really catchy (not talking about those promo songs :/ ) and having this great soundtrack is hard to top. Though it didn't contain a lot of tracks, we got an updated that added a lot of new songs. So far Splatoon 2 songs sound good, but not as good as the original
5. Story Mode: The story mode in Splatoon was really a neat work of art. By playing through the single player campaign, you have to get used to different play styles and helps improve your skills for multiplayer matches. Things such as aiming and positioning are required to complete single player so you improve your skills while having fun and not getting destroyed by level 50s from Japan. Not only that, but if you get the optional DLC, you can play through a lot of the campaign again but are limited with the roller or charger. Best of all, you can play as the un-nerfed Kraken! I don't even need to talk about the final boss
6. Loading Screens: Splatoon's match making lobbies isn't the greatest and sometimes I get put in a lobby that you can't leave and have to wait 2 minutes only to disconnect after. However, Splatoon developers foresaw how this could be a bore to some and added in something to do while I wait. Squid jump, while not a stellar game, was amusing enough to pass the time as I waited to play in a real game. The extra amiibos also gave 3 more different games to play with so when I was bored with Squid Jump I could play any of the other games as I waited. Squid Beats is the best minigame for sure :D
The gamplay for Splatoon 2 looks great, but is fundamentally the same as the original. The weapons, subs and specials all look good and have been balanced but I need to see more. Splatoon 2 looks good, but not great. I know with the additional and fixed weapons and specials, Splatoon would be good. But in my opinion, Splatoon 2 won't be able to surpass the original.. What are your thoughts?
