Forums - Gaming Discussion - Adjusted for inflation, Switch costs the same as launch as Wii (in US)

So the Wii launched in 2006 at $250. Not sure if it came with a nuncheck. And came bundled with Wii Sports and one Wii remote.

Funny - $300 in todays US dollars just about *exactly* equals $250 in 2006 dollars.

You don't get a packed in game with Switch, but you technically have the equivalent of 2 wii remotes in the joycons. It just seems funny that people are calling the Switch overpriced when in real terms it's priced nearly as well as the Wii was in the first place.

Of course - PS4 and X1 are far more price-competitive than PS3 and 360 were in this era, but likely really because PS4/X1 have been out much longer.

The difference is that the Wii was $150 cheaper than the competition and came with a pack in game. This time around the Switch costs just as much as the other systems, and doesn't come with a free game. After you factor in a free Uncharted 4, the PS4 is $240. So Nintendo is asking $300 for old outdated tech, when Sony and MS are asking $240 for current gen tech.

I don't think the Switch itself is expensive(well in the US at least) but the accessories is.

This is not a shot at you but why does it seem like a lot of people are deflecting for Nintendo ever since the Switch reveal....Heck a LOT of stuff cost the same adjusted for inflation....doesn't mean that those things are not expensive now a day though....

But YES the Switch is expensive....especially coming with no game. Then add in the fact that you can get 2 other systems that are more power and come WITH a game it becomes and issue. I think that is the issue with the price and while bringing the Wii into this wasn't it also CHEAPER than the other 2 when it came out. So you have to take the entire picture into perspective not just part of it that makes it look like the price of the Switch is fine....when it isn't. Just my opinion of course and again not a shot at you at all.

The absence of evidence is NOT the evidence of absence...

Everyone is expecting cheaper consoles these days, which is why they're generally less a jump than in the past (given the 8 years that passed, the jump between xbox360/ps3 and xbox1/ps4 was rather a joke).

I recall reading that, adjusted for inflation, the PS4 was Sony's least expensive console to manufacture, the xbox1 WOULD have been Microsoft's had they not jumped the price with the kinect initially, and the Wii U only missed the mark because of the Gamepad's cost and how cheap the Wii already was.

In general, ever since 2008 we've seen costs continuing to drop, and the consumers are far less willing to pay a bit extra to allow for stronger hardware (not terribly surprising given what occured in 2008). The old costs of consoles and games would probably shock a lot of people today.

True but.. independent of whether you own or are even interested in PS4/X1, the price point of the Switch is essentially the same as the Wii. Switch is really competing for the attention of people that either already own PS4/X1 and those who really don't have interest in PS4/X1 (e.g. casuals).

Say you own a PS4 ... but no Vita, 3DS, X1, WiiU or Switch. Which is going to be most appealing to you?

PS4 and X1 have no portability or Joycon features either.

They should have just had the console come with a downloadable WiiU port. Maybe you could choose between a few that would be easy to port like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, Splatoon, New Super Mario Bros U etc.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

Besides an SD card, I'm not really sure how necessary the extra accessories are.

People get upset about the grip not being the charge grip but... you still gotta charge the charge grip, right?

Unless you're committed to playing Bomberman with a large number of people or just super hyped for ARMs multiplayer, getting extra joycons isn't immediately necessary.

The price of the Pro Controller is admittedly shameful, but didn't the X1 and PS4 controllers launch at close to $70 as well? And those still have pretty lousy battery options for what you pay for. I think I can live with the grip until the price comes down.

Given the form factor, the Switch portable may already fit into carrying cases people already own for 3DS or other systems.
