Forums - Nintendo Discussion - When will 3DS' successor launch?

They also said that "DS won't replace GBA" and "NX isn't a successor to WiiU".

Unless Switch fails, I don't think there will be a separate Nintendo handheld.

The Switch won't fail because it will be sold at a profit out of the gate. Kimishima-san said so. But the Switch is just one revenue stream and Nintendo's mobile games will be the other. Nintendo will still have two pillars, Switch and mobile. So in a way smart phones are the 3DS successor.

You shouldn't give up so soon. Even if it does not fail commercially it can still fail in every other possible way :)

Well, the crazy thing is Nintendo is coming out with a gaming tablet that is more powerful than their last home console, so it makes "Nintendo" sense to call it a home console. All games Nintendo makes will work on one device so there is no reason to expect more devices in the future. I'm not giving up. I'm giving in to Nintendo's weird logic. The 3DS will be the last in the DS line, just as the GB Advance was the last in the line of GameBoy systems. The Switch has joined home console and portable into one Siamese conjoined twin and medical science is not advanced enough to separate them.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

Switch FC: SW-0398-8858-1969

end of 2018. I'm not buying the idea that Nintendo will have only one device. I think they will release a smaller, cheaper version of the switch, it will still be able to plug into the TV but everything will be sold separately, no detachables joy cons either, but it will be compatible with all the Switch games and accessories.
And maybe a better battery.

But I don't think they ll release something that is clearly different of the switch, they need to have their devices unified.

But clearly, I can't imagine that the Switch, with its bulky, gamer look will be alone. Nintendo released 5 versions of the 3DS, so if they focuse on the Switch family only, you can expect even more and widely different iterations.

Ya obviously Nintendo will release multiple iterations, however that would still make Switch the successor to 3DS.

I could see a portable only Switch Mini like you said, no detachable controls and a 5 inch screen so about the size of PSP/Vita.

Switch TV, a revision similar to PS TV, basically if the hardware were directly inside the dock.

Switch Pro, a DSi/New 3DS style upgrade, so a bit more powerful and perhaps a 1080p screen.

Outside of the port of Yoshi's Woolly World are there any first party 3DS coming out next year?

Thanks I knew I was forgetting some. But that is a lot smaller then the past few years so yeah its pretty clear Nintendo is beginning to wrap up development of 3DS games.

to be fair, at this time last year we didn't know about Kirby: Planet Robobot, Mario Party: Star Rush, Pokemon Sun/Moon or Super Mario Maker 3DS.  I doubt they will but it is possible that Nintendo could announce more major 1st party titles throughout the year.

What I do expect is Miitopia (released a few weeks ago in Japan) to come West along with Nintendo publishing a few localized Japanese titles, we already know Dragon Quest VIII is coming over and I think Yokai Watch 3 is a given.

So overall that's a pretty solid lineup of Nintendo-published titles for 3DS' 7th year.

Like most people here, I'm saying "March 2017" because if Nintendo releases a true successor to the 3DS, that just tells me that the Switch failed because Nintendo doesn't have the manpower to support two separate HD platforms.

Yep, releasing a seperate handheld as a 3DS successor goes against everything they are trying to achieve with Switch.
