Why were some of you so surprised by Overwatch's success?

a. It's Blizzard, almost everything they make is at least moderately successful

b. The pre-release reception was extremely positive. There were tons of views on youtube trailers. Closed beta keys were more sought after than any previous game ever, so much so that the community dubbed themselves Onlywatch because they could only watch let's plays and twitch streams of those in the beta instead of being able to play it themselves.

I knew Overwatch would be a huge success all along.

Not to mention that their marketing machine was only slightly less omnimpressent and poweful than the Nazi party's propaganda machine in 1930s Germany :P.  I mean, if Overwatch hadn't been a big success, I would have been absolutely astounded.

KOF XIV (Positive)
- It was pretty delightful to see the game that, despite the sacrifice in graphic, manage to keep up with contents and design.

Titanfall 2 (Positive)
- Except the part where EA manage to screw it up.

Street Fighter V (Negative)
- Really, Capcom? That mess at the launch wasn't enough? Season 2 Pass?

Mighty No.9 (Negative)
- I expected functionally working game...

The fact that anyone bought Watchdogs 2 was a surprise for me, I'm not sure if that is a positive or neg though.

Not to mention how popular its content was on pornhub and such sites around the time of release, people clearly loved everything about the game!

And yeah like you said, Blizzard game, those are pretty much sure fire going to sell a good number, blizzard doesn't have a lot of games, but the ones it has, it handles right.

Overwatch selling well isn't really a shocker. It's a Blizzard game. I also expected Watch Dogs 2 and Titanfall 2 to sell much worse than the first games in both series. The first games were built on hype and let a lot of people down and their sequels didn't get a fraction the media attention that those first entries got.; The writing was on the walls. Also with Titanfall 2 sandwiched in between Battlefield and CoD, I think a lot of people called that months ago. I'm also surprised a lot of people are saying they're surprised Pokemon sold so well. Has it ever not?

Speaking of Pokemon, though, I'm surprised Pokken did as well as it did. It's supposedly sold better than Street Fighter V. Street Fighter V is one I actually thought would do much better than it did. I'm also shocked Gears of War 4 was so under the radar. Mafia III probably sold much better than it deserves, considering it's the lowest rated in the franchise and yet the fastest selling. Kinda like inFamous: Second Son was to that franchise a few years ago. Ratchet & Clank seems to have sold really well for a 3D platformer. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Dishonored 2 both did much worse than their predecessors and much worse than I expected.

Pokemon has indeed always sold very well but up until the Pokemon Go craze, no one expected it to do as good as it has.  I mean I think everyone expected it to slightly outmatch X and Y which would still be good.  But right now it is outpacing Red and Blue, has pushed sales of the five year old 3DS to the point that there are supply constraints, and isn't showing any signs of stopping.  People aren't surprised at the fact it succeeded, they're surprised it pushed poke-fever to mid 90s levels.

And yeah Pokken no doubt surprised many, but I kinda saw it coming.  First ever HD pokemon game of any kind, a substantial Pokemon spinoff.  Still pleasing.

Street Fighter V though was very shocking, even with all the negativity I expected more.

Positive: Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth

Negative: Bomba no. 9

For me... Probably the resssurgence of pokemon is a positive. It even had an effect on sun and moon.

Titanfall 2.... Disappointed after the first managed over 3 million on the xbox one alone... Titanfall 2 will be lucky to get that across all platforms it seems.

I'm surprised Splatoon hasn't been mentioned so far at all.
Especially given overall state of Wii U, it did surprisingly great.

That launched last year :P

OK, I had the impression most of it's sales had come this year, though. /shrug
