Forums - General Discussion - Amazon Go And Self Driving Cars: Are We Headed To An Automated Future?

Yes, the future is bright, people will do more productive things than waiting in lines or wasting energy driving cars.

Wish I was born 50 years later.

I personally am all for a fully automated future.
Get these filthy humans away from me.

In my eyes one of the most exiting things that could happen, would be an A.I. producing a more efficient A.I.
What we could gain from such an event and those that follow, would be worth damming mankind.

The thing is you can't get into the store without scanning the phone, and once you're in, whatever you pick up and bag is automatically charged, so you can't really shop lift.

You get charged for whatever you pick up and don't put back onto the shelf.

Well apart from making it look incredibly easy to get in without scanning your phone (people get on trains without tickets and those barriers actually have gates and guards), it also seems like it would make it incredibly easy to steal someone elses phone, scan than and then take whatever you want and let them pay.

You mean as opposed to credit cards and keys which are unstealable? That fear is irrational. It's just as easy to steal from there at it is in today's markets. The number of thieves won't just increase because it got slightly easier.

And even if. Think about the complete lack of robberies and their related casualties. And if Amazon really thinks too much stuff gets stolen, they will do something about it. It's not like anyone is hurt here.

With keys you immediately know when they are gone and you can change locks.

Credit cards have become a bit more tricky since wireless pay and easier to take details from with the right tools.

My pessimism isn't anymore or less than CCs, but it's the worry of continuation whereby it's adapted in more places, therfore increasing the places where you can have your personal details, cash and more cloned or stolen.

I know people who used to do this stuff and they would 6-12 months on stolen details before using them.

The consequences can be as much as waiting 3 days before the bank refunds you, the medium which is a domino effect of bills stacking up and extra charges occurring, having to replace bits and pieces that may take a few weeks or the deadly one where you wake up one morning and someone's rented a house under your name, taken out contracts for utilities etc and has started his own urban Mary jane business that gets you arrested at the break of dawn. since nothing was linked to your bank account you didn't know until the rude awakening.

And how many deaths have they caused in the last 130 years?

It`s not just fear of technology, these things can and most likely will be dangerous. Sure if they`re successful then eventually they will become much safer but still by trying out any of this stuff any time soon you are definitely taking a risk.

Cars or drivers? And how many deadly accidents would we have had with horse traffic?

Probably 99.9% of accidents are human error/misbehaviour. Right now we see assistant systems. Which already make driving much safer. And assistants are basically standard in some areas already.

Self driving cars does seem to become more and more realistic

Just a bit worried about malfunctions/hacking etc. but it's not a bad idea.. :/

Of course we are, and it's great. There's obviously some drawbacks to it as well, but it's mostly awesome. I'm just a bit scared of the transition period when a ton of jobs will probably be lost, and there's still enough resistance so the jobless can't be taken care of properly.

What's next, videogames that play themselves. Oh nvm.

I'll enjoy driving myself for as long as possible. But at some point insurance rates will go way up for non self driving cars. Perhaps it will be safer. I just saw a dead deer on the highway, car on the emergency lane a bit further on, pretty dented with blood and guts all over it. No clue if automated cars are good enough yet to avoid that.
