Forums - Gaming Discussion - Predict How long will NX keep its 9th Gen lead over PS5/XBTwo??

zero129 said:

You do understand console gens dont start or stop when MS and Sony say so right?.

For all indeeds NX is Nintendos 9th Gen console and the first True 9th gen console too. Its not an upgrade like the PS4Pro and XB1S.

This post hurts me.

Console generations are meaningless now, it's stupid to group together consoles in "generations" with the current unsynchronized releases.

NX - March 2017?

PS5 - Holiday 2019?

That's almost a 3 year gap, now let's say the NX2 comes out Holiday 2022, and the PS6 doesn't come out till Holiday 2026, a 4 year gap. Are they still the same generation?

When the companies don't have fairly synchronized launches of products grouping them product into so called "generations" is dumb. You'll get into a situation where eventually you'll be saying "FIRST TRUE 11TH GEN CONSOLE!!!!" before other companies have even put out their so called 10th gen console.

The concept of industry-wide generations is meaningless now. The NX could very well spend half of it's lifespan competing with the ps4/xbo not other "true 9th gen systems"

How do you even define a "generation" of consoles, the NX is supposedly no more powerful than an xbo, it's release date may be closer to that of the ps4/xbo than the ps5/xbo2, so what makes it a "ninth generation console".

What was the first gen?

You mean the first ever gen of consoles? That would be the likes of the Pong machines and such.

Just curious. I've never known when people who count gens started counting.

So starting with Pong till now is 9 gens?

l <---- Do you mean this glitch Gribble?  If not, I'll keep looking.

Then they have changed their minds and its not the Scorpio they promised us anymore.

Ok then what if the XBone can still play cut down versions of scorpio games kinda like how low end PC's can still play the same games higher end systems can. But what if MS calls it the XB2 and says its not an upgraded XB1 but a whole new Xbox. Will it then be classed as gen 9?.

MS might of been planning on an upgraded XB1 at first. But when they seen sony was doing the same thing they might of changed plans.

Well then its still an 8th gen console. Of course it would be a new thing, but if the console doesnt have a unique library, then its not a new console. Its an upgrade of the current.

Universally yes, from Pong to now is 8 gens, when NX launches it will be 9 gens.

Right got it. So then its only a "True 9th gen" system when Sony and MS say so?.

This post hurts me...

Why should Sony PS5 be classed as 9th gen then?. please do explain this to me..

It shouldn't, there shouldn't be any classing of generations.

NX doesn't fit to be grouped with either PS5 or an Xbox Two.

If Nintendo's "True 10th generation console" launches 2021 does that make a hypothetical PS6 released in 2026 be in the same generation?

There is no industry-wide synchornisity like there has been in the past, the span between the release of new devices by the companies will also decrease, the concept of generations is dated, it no longer applies.

The NX is not a "9th generation" console, the PS5 will not be a "9th generation" console. The eighth generation was the end.

Your own struggling in this thread with trying to define if scorpio/ps4pro or xb2/ps5 will be in this or that generation based on forward compatibility should be evidence enough that the time of "generations" is over.

Ok but what if PS4Pro can play PS5 games? and what if XB2 can play XB3 games?.

Ok, if THAT happens then Im wrong.

Okay, thanks. I started with Vic 20 but when I was a kid there was no internet, obviously, and we didn't gather around my neighborhood classifying game machine generations.

I was not sure how far back people counted. I figured I was a dinosaur.

Can't answer this question. I don't consider or know by what metric the NX should be called a 9th gen console when its less or as powerful as the XB1. Hell at this point we don't even know if it's a home console, a handheld console, a home console that can be used as a handheld or a handheld console that cane be used as a home console.....

Full Definition of generation

a : a body of living beings constituting a single step in the line of descent from an ancestor
b : a group of individuals born and living contemporaneously
c : a group of individuals having contemporaneously a status (such as students in a school) which each one holds only for a limited period
d : a type or class of objects usually developed from an earlier type

contemporaneously : existing or happening during the same time period.

*edit:

This isnt how most gamers understand the world "generation" applied to consoles.

Its not just about the 1 product, being another in a line from the last one of its kinde.

People are talking past one another, because they have differnt understandings of what the word means applied to consoles.

Nintendo guys here are saying Generations = d.

Others are saying Generations = b.

Both are right.

Nintendos next system is their 9th.

But its not a 9th gen (it wont exist to compete against PS5 or XBtwo, but rather 8th gen systems, PS4 & XB1) = its a 8th gen system in that sense.

It depends on how you think the word generations is used with consoles.

If its a blue ocean strategy console it will win that generation
