Yahoo is crap and Bing is crap. Putting those two together wouldn't make them any less crap. If anything, they would be more crappier. 🤔

They would have been written off like the Nokia phone division eventually, if that deal went through.

So basically they dodged a mini nuke.  A $40BN write off would be nasty.  BTW is it still called bing? I completely forgot about that.

I see they offered close to $50 BILLION a few years ago to buy yahoo.  But their offer was turned down. Yahoo was recently sold for almost $5 BILLION.

So I ask,  if Microsoft bought them for $50BN would yahoo's value have dramatically dropped and it would have been a terrible deal,  or would Microsoft have kept yahoo as a top player in the game?

Did Microsoft unintentionally dodge a bullet?

It's not so much Microsoft dodged a bullet, the tech world and its users dodged a bullet.  Let's put it like this: Hotmail was up and coming.  Microsoft bought out Hotmail.  Where's Hotmail now?  See my point, and I think Yahoo saw that as well.

Hotmail is useful.  I use my Gmail for all the important stuff and a Hotmail for all the potential spammy stuff.

When a female CEO comes to power, you know the company is very likely going down. It's nice to see she was able to sell it too a big stong man, eh, company.

Haha that's actually funny.  I wonder if it actually makes a difference!

That's a nice list of crap. 😛

Yeah, I never said it was good stuff (flickr might be the biggest one). But then remember, MS bought Mojang for $2.5billion... which at the time was a company that was making about $90mil a year profit. It will take them over 20 years to get that back from the company if they stay around that sum. So not really sure how MS value things.

It is cheaper than paying taxes and dividends.

Bing is crap

I use it all the time. What's wrong with it?

Same, perfectly competent search engine imo.

What's a Yahoo?

Aside from not being Google?

I've had instances where it yielded better results than Google.

Cough...porn...cough. I mean, not that I would know, but I've heard...:)

Yeah except yahoo just sold their US operation and are still worth 10s of billions with their asian stakes in alibaba among other assets....

An other financial subject talked about without proper information... MS didn't dodge anything

I would say as a search engine, Bing is way, way better than Google nowadays, but to each their own I guess :).

Far more to it than you seem to understand.

Thanks for the insightful post.  I'm all the wiser after that.  Cheers :)

Video search is soo much better on Bing than on google.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Using bing is pretty good imo. You can get reward points and you are able to use the points to buy xbox related stuff.
