Forums - General Discussion - How could tablets and smartphones be suitable for text editing?

I need to write loads ot text, when I use a PC for work it`s mainly for writing. Tablets and smartphones have come a long way and the use cases that requires a full fldeged desktop system are getting lower every year.

But one thing I can`t see how mobile can ever do well are tasks that requires the precision of a pointer, just like text editing and formatation. It`s possible to write something in an iPad or Android Tablet, but it sucks to make fine editing, like I need to do for work and college. Word for mobile is great because it allows to make some corrections and reading documents whitout destroying the formatation of said archive, but I can`t even imagine me editing a 100 pages text on touchscreen.

What could make mobile good for text writing and editing? Even not needing a high-end pc to run Office suite, I`m sure the newer phones and tablets are more than enough for running it, it will never will happen because of touchscreen limitations.

Connecting a bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth mouse? Should already work for Android and Windows tablets.

voice commands combined with eye tracking could also work in the future.

How about a docking station for your smart phone, thats hooked up to a keyboard+mouse?

^ done.

All new phones are more than powerfull enough to run a MS word like program.
Whats needed is just a docking station, and Smartphones could be the future of office work spaces.
(instead of pc's)

Something like this works too (turns your phone into a laptop):

119$ for a laptop (thats hallow) (your phone becomes your laptop)

Keyboard and mouse. After which you practically have a laptop when you're using keyboard and mouse with your tablet/phone.

People learned how to navigate the web with mobile devices and we're currently raising a generation that will be brought up with touch screens from very early on. I can easily see that they're able to be productive at text editing which will also evolve on mobile devices.

Maybe mouse and keyboard will be a niche item for dedicated pc gamers only in 20 years.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

But this is a workaround of touchscreen limitations, it`s just turning a tablet into a laptop, for that we can use Chromebooks. I mean a way to overcome touchscreen limitarions but still use nothing but touchscreen to have the work done.

There is no better tool than a mouse & keyboard, and I doubt there ever will be.

Also you can enjoy that experiance on phones, so you dont have to overcome touchscreens being bad.

You simply walk around it. Use the tools you have, that already work better.

Of course it is a workaround. A tablet or smartphone ain't the best tool for the task you described. But the touchscreen limitations doesn't matter for many many other tasks. Most people don't have to edit hundreds of pages and a tablet can be more useful for them to cater their tasks than a heavier laptop.
