Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Patent For Supplemental Computing Device Granted

wow!! would be awesome if this concept is put to use, hopes up :)

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Whatever Nintendo is doing, I'm sure they know it's a good idea and I simply can't wait for it to be unveiled. They're not the type who takes failure very well.

This sounds very cool.

l <---- Do you mean this glitch Gribble?  If not, I'll keep looking.

I am on the other side of my sig....am I warm or cold?

Would be a very interesting feature to implement for NX, though I could see it being a bit complicated to market for the mainstream user. The core gaming fanbase would eat it up though, as long as Nintendo could secure software to make use of the extra power.

As long as its plug and play (should be something easy, like inserting a cartridge into a Super NES), and there aren't like multiple different docks it should be fairly straight forward.

The people who want the SCD are likely enthusiast/graphics-centric gamers so they'll have some knowledge of this stuff, but I'd guess Nintendo would keep it simple.

It should be kept simple for developers too so they can support the SCD if they want, but it's only one config they need to worry about.

I think we see multiple options for the SCD.  The Tablet will be the basic system.  But the SCD could offer options of more processing, a harddrive and more RAM.  Based on the patent above, I expect there will be an option for that + it will link to a home controler (s).   Just insert your tablet and play.

But there will probably be an option that only connects you to a TV.

I think keeping it simple would be the best way to go.

Also the patent says the SCD shares the power supply unit of the base console, so it's probably not going to be wild with like 800 different things.

Just an extra SoC alone (that consumes say 10-20 extra watts) would be fine.

Maaaaybe a few years down the line they could replace the initial SCD unit with a 4K SCD as Tegra X3/X4 or whatever comes along.

It's needs to be fairly simple for the consumer to understand. Buy the SCD dock and you get full 1080P XB1/PS4 type graphics on your home TV. There simple enough. Regular people don't understand things like FLOPS and you don't want them thinking about things like RAM count or whether or not game X/Y/Z runs well on Dock Version 1.48 when they have Dock 1.3.

Of course they share a power supply, the SCD is most likely the docking station.

The base unit would have to have its power supply too though, what if someone doesn't own the docking station in that case?

I'm sure it will.  But the base station/SCD is most likely designed to sit at your home and be plugged in at all times.  You just plop in the tablet and play/charge.  I expect two SKUs, and the portable-only version would just have a plug.

Nintendo eXpandable confirmed. No more generations, just upgrade your hardware to keep playing new games. Pc started it, now mobile phones can do it, only natural home consoles to do it.

I actually don't expect two SKUs.

The NX is the NX and the appeal of it is going to be that it does "everything, everywhere". That's your SKU and Nintendo is going to throw everything at that concept and emphasize the lower price. There's never really been a major console that can do what the NX can hypothetically do, so they have to make hay on that message.

SCD will in my opinion just be an optional accessorie for people who really cannot deal with lower rung graphics on their TV. And that's fine. Enthusiasts don't need to be the priority, just give them an option so they can stop crying and let that be that.

If they have multiple SKUs I think the problem is it muddies the message a bit too much and causes confusion for the regular consumer like "well if I buy the cheap NX, am I getting ripped off somehow?", I don't think Nintendo wants that. When you have two SKUs and one is cheaper people invariably go with the "oohhhh, I see what you're trying to do, you're trying to rip me off with this cheap SKU, but basically your system really costs $100+ more, that's basically the same as this PS4 Neo over here". You don't want that. This is why the 8GB Wii U for $50 less didn't work out so great.

Don't see why it wont be granted... I am sure all of their patents will be granted provided they aren't infringing. I think this says nothing concrete about the actual console/handheld itself...
