Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox To Require Sign In Every 5 Years To Maintain Gamertag

Wish Sony could do the same, but PSN was poorly set-up, the account is directly tied to the name. This is why we still don't have name changes on PSN, it would require a massive reworking of their database. Still, I hope they do it...

Lol, it's a good idea to remove inactive users but 5 years!? That's clearly too much. I'd say 18 months would be enough to say that the user has clearly moved on to elsewhere or away from gaming completely.

PSN ID: Stokesy

Add me if you want but let me know youre from this website

Seems fair.

Not sure if ithis is newsworthy enough to deserve it's own thread though...

5 years is plenty of time and it also allows for people to just take names and then do nothing with them for 5 years, either way it;s generous for those who want to keep their name and those that want to horde some. You only lose the tag, not the account so I see nothing wrong with this at all, though I can imagine some making a big deal out of it despite how little it actually matters.

Actually it's not hard at all. Any database expert could write you a script to change the key attrribute and relations in a database. The last reason they gave was that it's not a technological issue but that they didn't want you to change it constantly. Which is a pretty bullshit reason. So I'm just gonna assume that they won't do it because it is any work at all and they're just lazy bastards.

To be fair it's nice to know this just in case, I've moved from X360 to PS4 but can just make sure and check back in every so often to make sure this wouldn't happen since I like my gamertag and have the same one on psn/xbl/nnid wouldn't want xbl to be different down the line if I go and get a scorpio at a point.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Eh, as long as it's just the gamertag but not the rights or anything else, it's good enough. Annoying, but you lose your whole Outlook and Dropbox account if you don't log in at least once in a year, so it's not that bad.

this is a none issue... seriously...

5 years is not a big deal for most people, but why have a limit? Why not just have it eternal?

Scorpio pre-order cancelled.

For real though, I think this is for the best. I'm always very annoyed when somebody uses my siganture usernames even though their accounts are inactive. 5 years seems too much in my eyes, 2 or 3 seems right.
