Forums - Gaming Discussion - I am Setsuna looks to be another JRPG under Square Enix's "Budget Plan" - Is this going to work?

I'll try Setsuna, but my faith is placed in Cosmic Star Heroine to be the better game.
The fact that its getting a physical release and Setsuna isn't kinda strengthens that.

I would hardly call Chrono Trigger short. The game lasts around 40 hours give or take. Its what rpgs tended to last back in the day.

To the subject at hand, I am Setsuna is a budget title probably due to the fact that Tokyo RPG Factory is a new studio, and this is their first game(and with that I assume their members are mostly new to the industry). So this title is more of a game to get them used to development than anythign else.Thats my opinion at least.

Chrono Trigger is most likely a 20-30 hour game, on the first time through. There is a lot to do in the game, especially with multiple endings, but the game isn't terribly long like some other RPGs.

On the subject, I am enjoying SO5 for what it is. Does it have problems? Of course it does, but every game does have problems. I am also looking forward to Setsuna, as I don't have a lot of time to play games nowadays and shorter ones are always welcomed.

Well, I played Chrono Trigger and I took 35 to 40 hours. While I did do more than needed to beat the game, that would never put it at 20 hours, and hardly at 30 hours.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

If they say its like Chrono Trigger then i'm all for it!

even if chrono trigger is "just" 20-30 hours its still longer then 90% of todays rpgs.
And I spent atleast 40+ hours on Trigger on my first try just o have the "best" ending

That's a tough argument to back up, considering nearly every JRPG that came out this year alone has pushed 50 hours on average. The only ones in recent memory that are shorter than 30-40 hours are SO5 and stuff like Child of Light. If your definition of recent is like 2008, sure, new RPGs are short.

An RPG being short isn't a bad thing, that was my point. If one of the best games of all time is a short RPG, we shouldn't be up in arms that a sequel of sorts to that game is short too.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

After seeing some reviews i decided it's not really worth it to get. The whole game is spent in the snow. That is literally the only envyronment there is (plus some ruins).
So, it really turned me off from getting it. That is not the good way i see "budget" working.

But World of FF for example, i'm sure will do well.

reminds me of " too much water "

Sigh... the difference is that "too much water" was a lie. Most of the landmass in ORAS isn't water. You only get water zones at the end of the game.

Nah, I'm really pleased with this shift in direction from Square Enix. To be honest it was only in the past few years that they really let up with it - in the 7th gen they'd done AAA (consoles); smaller games (mobile) and mid-sized games on handhelds, with PSP occasionally getting something I think you could call AAA (Crisis Core/Type-0).

Then around... 2012 maybe? They shifted into this ridiculous state of AAA or mobile, where Tomb Raider's 3.4m was disaster etc.

I love mid-tier JRPG's. It's what companies like Falcom and Gust thrive on. I'd say Square-Enix are a step above them with production values, but not by much really. It's just whether it's a worthwhile venture for them, because obviously your Compile Hearts and Nippon Ichi's see massive success from selling 50k copies of a cheaply made game, whereas it's just a drop in the ocean for Square Enix and I'm not sure it's worth pursuing.

Still, with the right IP attached (see: Dragon Quest Builders) I think it's worth carrying on with.

There is only one western review from a lowly site and Japanese import impressions, but I am Setsuna looks to be another budget title from Square Enix clocking in at around 20-25 hours...hmmm, sounds similiar to STAR OCEAN but now I reminded of something.

From SE President:

“It’s important to create new IPs, but creating big IPs is difficult,” said Matsuda when asked about making new IPs. “Having been looking at the game industry up until now, it’s quite common to see [a video game series] take the form of a trilogy. In that sense, we need to have at least three [titles] before knowing whether it will continue growing or not.”
Star Ocean is not a new IP but was describe as a reboot here by SO Producer:

“Yamagishi-san he was the producer that created the PSP remake and released the PS4 and Vita version in Japan. After he released the remake he hasn’t really done anything for the West. At this moment, there are no plans to release that title in the West,” Kobayashi told Siliconera.

He continued, “However, these are my personal thoughts and nothing has been decided yet, but since I am kind of rebooting the [Star Ocean] series I know that I can’t leave it alone. I would love to release it somehow. Maybe create a back catalog or have some way to purchase it because I know a lot of people and maybe even people who play this new title would want to play the older [Star Ocean] titles too.”

So, the point of discussion here is do you think this plan is going to work? I think its a smart plan and I dont think SE is wrong for taking this approach, but a part me feels like that this might backfire and end up doing more harm than good, especially to known IP's like STAR OCEAN, who have had bigger budgets in the past. Star Ocean 5 is a great game I think it could have a done a lot to reverse the damage that Star Ocean 4 caused to brand if givin the proper resources but we have is something will most likely be another black spot on the reputation. tri Ace said theey have a script ready to go for Valkryia profile 3, but we want a VP3 with a low budget? I can see it working if it has a VP1 setup but still..Then theres the rumor of Front Mission coming back most likely under the budget plan
I am Setsuna is coming out in 10 days and I'm just dreading the response because it looks cheaper than SO5, its even worse with the fact that 20-25 hour mark is including the few side quest the game has to offer with no post game content, but it does have Chrono nostalgia to work with, but we also know how harkening usually ends up. On top of all of that gamers in the west are so into numbers as a judgement of game worth that budget plan doesnt help there either.

How do you want I am Setsuna to look then? The game isnt full 3D like a Star Ocean or Final Fantasy, it's a throwback to 5th gen era rpgs and it looks gorgeous.

And rpgs especially those with smaller budgets being around 25-30 hour is perfect and its a wise choice for SE. They can take the risk to revive rpg styles of the past with smaller budgets.

Ima have to abridge mh message in this thread.

This is not about wether we like the budget approach or not. Its about its chances of success in spite of being budget title. Star Ocean 5 just hit the western world to abysmal western reviews, though people who are playing the game are enjoying it or at the very least like it. So this budget approach had negative impact/backfired, on Star Ocean even though its a good game.

Valkryia Profile 3 would be fucking amazing.
