Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Has New TV Marketing Slogan

Something people will try to change, make memes, and then spread everywhere on the internet.

You can do this with anything with varying degrees of success.

Someone's totally doing a "There's No Games On It" spoof for the Wii U aren't they ...

Done, now someone make a better one because I have literally zero talent and am exceptionally lazy.

That's... a strange slogan... I don't really get it.

A play on word  to the phrase "There's no place like it!" - a way of saying "This is fun, unique, awesome"

Ah thanks for explaining makes sense now! The only phrase I could think of was "There's nothing like it" or "There's nothing quite like it" so I thought Nintendo were really reaching, but it makes sense now!

Sure, we can be jerks and take things out of context for the lulz, but

who am I kidding lol. For a company that's known for great quality control in the games dept, I'm shocked how they let this pass in their marketing. I expect a revision...

It's really not that bad a slogan, but people will make fun of pretty much anything if they can. Especially when it comes to Nintendo recently.

It's not exceptionally terrible, guys. It's not Nintendo's best but it's nothing compared to some of the Gen 7 marketing campaigns all around. If they slap the Nintendo logo nearby it'll do what it's meant to: Draw in old fans with the "no place like home" sort of line so that the NX has some wider appeal ahead of its reveal.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

I chuckled.

I'm not really understanding the negativity. You're taking the slogan out of context and picking out two words that are next to each other. The slogan clearly is telling people that this is the only place you can find these games, hence "There's no play like it" because there isn't. You think PS4 "Greatness Awaits" is a great slogan? Talk about overselling something, it sounds cheesy and over-promises on the potential of the system. Nintendo's new slogan is a play on the "There's no place like it!" that sooooooo many vacation and destination commercials have used to advertise for their resorts or events. I understand it, I get it, and I think personally that it is a pretty well thought out slogan, and spells out exactly what you get with Nintendo's systems - great first party games and unique gameplay that you can't get on any other system. However, you haters may as well keep hatin'.

Sheeet.  I'm an objective Nintendo fan and I cringed the second I saw the slogan.  It's going to be a meme right away.  I'll give you some right away

"there's no games on it"
"there's no NX owners"
"there's no-thing to play"
"there's no-thing worth owning here"
"there's no one that cares"
"there's no 3rd party support"
"there's no (insert highly antipated 3rd party game)"
"there's no-where to go but down"

What were they thinking?  It makes me worried that they learned nothing from the Wii U's (and to a lesser extent, the 3DS's) failure.

OK, let me draw a comparison, the PS3 had a similar negative sort of slogan that you could take and tack anything onto the end of. It was: "It Only Does Everything" There are a million things that you could plug in after "It Only" and the PS3 was a failure when it first came out, so I am sure that there WERE a million things tacked onto the end of it. The PS3 went on to be one of the most successful home consoles ever. Even the original XBox with the slogan "Life is Short. Play more." could have had tons of jokes made from their slogan. It's not the way that the slogan is worded, it is the way that people decide (mostly gamers and media, who literally pick apart EVERYTHING) to take it out of context for an attack. This happens with every console, every iteration, every product out there that has popularity. It's called "Flame Wars" and it happens with every competing popular product because they have brand loyalty.

I don't think the slogan is bad, I think that the slogan is fine. I think that people's choice of depiction of the slogan is bad. However there have been worse things that Nintendo has recovered from (the best-selling system of it's generation was named the "Wii" for God's sake), especially considering I think this is largely an intentional out-of-context attack.

That most people would read the whole of the slogan as opposed to just a portion.

The over-exaggeration here is insane. But I guess I shouldn't expect any better.

The slogan is an obvious play on "There's no place like it." Incredible that people are this oblivious. Is it the greatest slogan ever? Nope. Is it the trash that select individuals are making it out to be? Absolutely not. It's fine.
