Forums - Gaming Discussion - Disney Infinity canceled, Disney stopping as video game publisher

By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.

Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

So what’s next for Disney Infinity? We have two final retail releases coming, including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.

And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.

But most of all, I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.

Given this info it's no surprise but man, they were making money off of this in it's early days weren't they?

If Disney are not going to do anything as a videogame publisher anymore, it's just a matter of time before all publishers ask for the licenses of their IPs.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Well, no wonder. Disney Infinity was such a boring thing. I remember my cousin asking for one Star Wars pack like crazy, only to play it two days and getting extremely bored. I also saw him playing and, while I could be biased, it looked terrible.

Good news, just license the IP to better devs who have better ideas.

Around the Network

I thought it was a sucess. Surprised about that, but otherwise makes sense. Disney is not good at developing games but seem to be getting the movie making formula down to perfection, so its for the best. Instead of making some mediocre games they can make some great movies instead.

I imagine this will create a rush to the figures though, and they will probably rise in price with time.

Seems that this came out of nowhere, but seeing that financial report, it makes sense. Its still a sad news anyway, even though I never played Disney Infinity.Hope that Disney licenses its IPs to the right developers(Square, Nintendo), and end up making wonderful games!

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

If I'm reading that right they lost $147m on Disney Infinity in the last 6 months. I see why they shut it down, that's a big loss.

Aye, considering that Skylanders passed the 2billion mark in revenue last year they were really pumping cash into infinity to try to get a slice of that pie, the thing is though, Skylanders has nice figures with a fantastic game series (except for superchargers) where the Disney Infinity games had mostly very nice Figures but awful awful games, most of the Figures for infinity were also completely locked to single stages of the game or were only usable in the created stages from the toy box, killed the incentive to buy more figures.

Edit - Gotta say though.... some of those Infinity figures are fantastic looking

Even down to the detail on what his stand is... fantastic design.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

hopefully Disney just starts licencing IP's like Marvel (they did that too Star Wars) to talented developers and AAA publishers cause the MCU has really gotten me in the mood to play a Marvel game.

Never did play Infinity but I can tell that it was quite the loss on their end.

On the bright side it has brought to my attention that they recently threw out some Zootopia figures so I'll have to snatch those up before Disney stop complete production along with scalpers.

They aren't even that expensive.
