The 3.8 Million shipped of Uncharted 3 was in November, just shortly after a major pricecut to the PS3 itself.

They shipped a fuckton of stock not only for launch, but to maintain supply throughout November and December. Uncharted 4 has launched in May, nowhere near any significant system selling push from Sony. They likely shipped a similar number of copies (possibly less), but it's also likely that Uncharted 4 actually *sold* more within the 7 day span. Uncharted 3 needed a huge shipment for the holiday season.

Remember that despite launching very early in November of 2011, Uncharted 3 "only" sold 700k throughout the entire Month (via NPD). Looking at these sold numbers, it's very likely that Uncharted 4 eclipsed that in a single Week, in May.

When comparing these things you have to look at when U3 was launched, and *why* it launched with so many copies shipped day one.

Suspected as much, the numbers wouldn't *appear* as impressive compared to Uncharted 3, so they used sold-through to obfuscate the numbers so you can't accurately compare the two. Makes sense.

I knew you would try to get at that, but there is nothing to suggest that. Why you (GribbleGrunger) would try cannibalize Uncharted 3 sales to praise Uncharted 4 sales I won't understand though.

I'm presenting you with the likely scenario because for some reason you've avoided answering a straight forward question. Your second sentence is just deflection. Face the facts, UC4 sold incredibly well and is likely to have met Sony's expectations because they're offering 'sold through' numbers not 'sold in.'

It's what I suspect.

Uncharted 3 saw inflated "launch" numbers because it was holiday stock. In reality it likely sold through the 3.8 Million by the end of the year. On the other hand, Uncharted 4 is looking like it's going to sell through 3.8 Million in half the time, in the mid-year lul, on 16 Million fewer consoles.

I see. Care to back up with any sort of evidence why you think the mainstream gamer pays particular attention to company PR pieces about sales?

Or do you think the average gamer also frequents message boards, and specifically boards that expose him or herself to this kind of PR. Because I'm not really seeing how your coming to that conclusion.

These articles go all over from gamefaqs to neogaf to /v/ to N4G to IGN. A lot of people read them and many of them fall right for the PR spin. Even on NeoGAF, people were drinking the Halo 5 PR kool-aid. These are not just investors and sales age, these are gamers. But no, obviously the most casual of players aren't really going to be on gaming forums or sites so they aren't going to see this.

"Average" gamer doesn't mean much, and is an empty, meaningless word. The "average" gamer doesn't read forums, but he hardly buys games either. Sergey of SteamSpy did an interesting piece that I think explains it better than I ever could. 1% of Steam owners own 33% of the games, 20% own 88% of the games. You shouldn't try to appeal to the "average" gamer.

I'm not sure what you're so argumentative about? Are you saying that PR spin doesn't exist? Are you saying that only investors and sales age reads these PR pieces?

No, I'm not saying any of those things. And given your examples, it's clear that you and I have a very different understanding of what constitutes that Average Joe or mainstream gamer. Since no evidence is being presented, we will just have to agree to disagree.

So, because 'expectations' aren't quantifiable, sales numbers can be legitimately ignored in order to continue suggesting it didn't sell that well? You're onto a winner here.

Sony must have been forced to put out these figures because clearly it hasn't met 'expectations'. Putting out these figures in NO WAY suggests Sony are happy with the sales. It's just PR to cover up low sales ...

And considering how QB and Halo 5 got PR, I don't think the presence or absence of PR really means anything. I'm not sure what took them so long though, usually PR comes out in the first few days. Interesting how they went from sold-in with Uncharted 3 to sold-through with Uncharted 4.

Despite a few days ago saying it was a red flag and one of your main bases believing  the game had bombed, always shifting those goal posts.

Someone who has his own theory about everything, and pays no regards to facts.anyway,UC4 is doing a great job.

Oh please, PR for games usually comes out in the first few days because it's usually in the form of copies shipped or some other tidbit. In this case, Uncharted 3 was overshipped so Uncharted 4 shipments would not have looked quite as good in comparison to Uncharted 3. So they waited for sell-through so no 1:1 comparison could be made between UC3 and UC4.
