Forums - Nintendo Discussion - NX launches March 2017 Globally

By the time NX launches PS4 will have 60 million user base and Xbox One will have 30 million user base with cheaper option. Plus PS4 Neo and Xbox One two will also release. Competition will be fierce.

NX is a gen 9 platform though it's not meant to beat out those platforms per say it's meant to deal with what comes after much like Megadrive releasing during the NES era. PS4 Neo and X1 slim won't have games specific to them either.

Saying Wii U was a gen 8 platform and didn't have to beat 360/PS3 didn't exactly help that out...

360 didn't beat out PS2 but look how well it did, Megadrive didn't beat out the NES but that did well, the idea is not to beat out the previous gen it's to gain a strong footing in its current gen as the previous gen will be phased out and that's what Wii U didn't do in its head start.

I'm starting to think that NX isn't a console after all..

-It won't simply replace Wii U or 3DS. If it was a console, why mention 3DS? It will replace them obviously as the next thing but it won't be a standard replacement.

-They are ignoring E3 as well as the typical launch period (Holidays)

Honestly, it could be anything involving gaming at this point.

*edit: still think its a console btw. Its what nintendo does... them not makeing a console... would be weird.

I wish more people would have made a bet in the civil war thread.

Yeah, I agree. For now, I'm just going to assume it's a console. Just, if it's not, I won't be shocked..

it's still kind of odd tho. Before, we would know for a fact it's a console or Handhed system. The fact that I'm questioning that tho says something

I just came here to say "I told you so!" to all the people that said I had no idea what I was talking about when I said the NX wouldn't come out until 2017. =P

March does seem like an odd time of year for a launch, though.

It's the end of the financial year. I said March 2017 in the crow thread. It does mean they can offset the hardware manufacturing into the previous year so bigger losses or lower profit in the current year that started on the first of April.

I'd count march as 2016 really (at least from a business perspective), as people saying 2017 vs 2016 meant next holidays. So are actually further out. (Never less than a year between unveiling and release was the main argument.) If have been amazed if it was any later than March as everything pointed to this fiscal year.

At bolded part: Yeah, as my birthday is in March and the next one will be the end of my 30s, I insist that March is not part of the prior year ;) I get what you're saying, however. Of course, Nintendo has been the king of delays, so I'd say March is a tentative thought. All the same, it still holds up to that 6-7 year console release cycle.

I think he is talking about how poorly WiiU did when they took this secluded approach of only relying on themselves. 360 and Megadrive competed with PS3 and SNES and had many of the same games.
So when you look at WiiU as an 8th gen console, it was a collosal failure in that regard. And I don't think Nintendo can do anything about the 9th generation on their own either, outside of what they did for the WiiU themselves. No one else will make 9th gen games until the industry as a whole is ready to move forward.
So if we look at NX as a 9th gen console, it will likely be a failed one as well in that regard. I expect most of NX's games to be 8th gen titles + Nintendo's own games. Therefore I'll probably refer to it as Nintendo's 7th generation console, or one that joins the collective 8th generation a few years late.

I don't really see your angle here tbh it can't fail as a 9th gen until other 9th gen platforms arrive and have been established, third parties won't make 9th gen games but Nintendo and their second parties will, a gen isn't decided by you and your personal view it's decided by platform release. That's the whole point of Megadrive and 360 they used the approach to establish a foothold, 8th gen titles plus Nintendo's offerings is already vast improvement over the Wii U.

Wii U also didn't have a secluded approach in fact it's approach was pretty much the same as other platforms before it, NX 's approach is more closer to the Wii actually which was kept in secrecy.

So does this confirm E3 2016 will be a barren wasteland for Nintendo?

Depends on how many deserts there are to show us in Zelda U.
