Forums - Sony Discussion - It Hurts me to Say That Ratchet and Clank is Disappointing

Compared to the original game. Why? Not because of the gameplay, the gameplay is solid, if more of the same, which makes it not the best Ratchet and Clank game, but still a good in that department. Not because of the graphics obviously, the graphics are sweet. It's because of the story. This is the game of the movie of the game. But the original game has a better story and takes Ratchet on a much better emotional journey. In the original game Qwark is an actual bad guy, not just a weak character who regrets his turn to evil 5 minutes after being snapped by Ratchet. But worse is the complete lack of real reaction by Ratchet to having his great hero turn out to be weak willed and easily turned to becoming a baddie. In the original Rathcet really gets disillusioned and spends almost half the game being pissed off at the world and not really invested in the main mission. He's going through the motions and is just angry all the time and being dragged through the story by Clank's insistence on conbtinuing on the right course. In this reboot Ratchet spends about 1 minute being a bit bummed out, and then when called back into actions he's back to normal. Why is it that the movie ends up giving Ratchet less emotional range than the original game? And also shying away from Qwark being an actual bad guy and now merely a dupe.

I get they wanted to reimagine the story, and that's fine, but they reimagined it worse instead of better. And of course the movie will suffer as a result. Though perhaps the movie will spend more time with Ratchet in a negative funk about Qwark's betrayal; one can hope.

I...disagree.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

come on now, u care about story in platformer ?

I agree, it's a little disappointing. It's a 7/10 for me.

The PS5 Exists.

I never played the original version so my experience with the game is largely different than yours.  Though I will agree that the time jump that happened after Ratchet found out (though it wasn't spelled out, I assume it was a time jump of sorts) seemed like it needed to be fleshed out more.

The only disappointing thing about this game is that there's only one new weapon. Other than that is a great game considering its low budget and the fact that it's a reboot. The story was changed to be shortened and to have a faster pace so that it could be translated as a movie I believe. I preferred too Quark as a bad guy, but we have Nefarious as a villain, which is hilarious! It is surely a better story if they want to make a sequel (movie and game).

Ratchet and Clank had a superfluous story, there was no "emotional journey". But I'm not sure now... maybe I played another version of the game? I always thought the story was there to have something to laugh at.

Because Ratchet was an unlikable ass in the original game and nobody liked that. It's literally one of the most complained about aspects of that game. It was an unwanted leftover of the 90s edge trope that was dropped in every sequel that followed.

"Play the game, based on the movie, based on the game!"

..and because like it or not, the movie and game are targeting children.

also this.  that first game is out of place with the rest of the franchise (for the worse, imo).
