Forums - Microsoft Discussion - The History of Xbox Exclusives. Do consoles really need exclusives?

Do consoles need exclusives?

Yes, they need permanent exclusives 198 84.98%

Yes, they need games that... 8 3.43%

No, but the only platform... 11 4.72%

No, only multiplatform ga... 16 6.87%

Total:233

Fact is NO but certain people won't admit that because thats one less thing about the Xbox that they can bitch about.

If you look at the PS4's success, this is proof. Yes, certain exclusives help, but its the 3rd party and 3rd party marketing rights/ exclusivity deals that gets the sales rolling.

The 360 would never have gained any ground if it wasn't for the many marketing deals with the various companies that once were in bed with Sony.

yes, just that maybe not for XB platform...

XB exclusives wouldn't have an impact on console sales? Maybe you're right but why just not for XB?

Are you joking? :p

Primary decision in buying a console is 3rd party, fact.
Secondary is exclusives, so PS and XB both tick the first decision. But then you turn to the secondary decision to decide which one is best. The majority choose PS.
But other factors included brand power, MS with Xbox do not have it. If PS4 had no exclusives it would still be selling more imo.

Forza Motorsport 6: Apex is PC only and its not really the same as Forza Motorsports 6 since its basically a free to play enhanced demo of the real game since it only has 66 cars and five tracks.

That's true.

You could be right. Time will tell. XB1 doesn't lose any games by sharing with PC but I still think experiences completely exclusive to a certain platform could have some kind of importance.

I think Kameo, Dead or Alive, Project Gotham Racing, Dead Rising, Saints Row, Gears of War, Viva Piñata, Crackdown, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Ninja Gaiden and Fable 2 did have an impact on 360's success.

Likewise Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Valkyria Chronicles, Killzone 2, inFamous, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2 and Ratchet & Clank: ACiT for PS3's sales.

Interesting input. So the secendary decision in buying an XB1 worsens because of the sharing of exclusives with PC. Or what?

Perhaps, not sure. But also forgot about specs, as a predominate multi plat buyer, i wouldn't buy the weaker. That wouldn't make sense.

That depends. They don't really need exclusives, they just need good games in general. But if they want to increase their marketshare and outsell the competition then they are going to need more good games than the competition, which means exclusives.

So as long as they're willing to settle for 2nd place (or worse) every generation then no, they don't need exclusives.

Though I think exclusives matter, you're probably right. A console with only 3rd party support would sell better than one with only 1st party.

Or will it? I kinda doubt it when those 3rd party games can be found elsewhere.

Need a good mix of both 3rd party and 1st party like Nintendos situation.

So you mean that XB1 is in the opposite situation where it lacks exclusives compared to Wii U that lacks multiplats?

sorry my bad, forgot to mention to me...

none of XB, X360 and X1 exclusives ever attract me enough to get the console, XB platform just couldn't get any exclusives for my cup of games all these years...

reason is because i'm more interersted in japanese games
