Yes they do, there is no dancing around it. Most gamers buy consoles for the multiplats yes (reason WiiU is doing as bad as it is), but it is the exclusives that make a person choose one platform over the other OR what urges some to be multiplatform gamers. Without exclusives the console will have no identity and eventually drop off altogether. I mean look at the X1, it had huge momentum from holiday 2014, but it was killed to a crawl with a barren first 3/4 of 2015 with nothing in the retail exclusive lineup other than screamride.

Even Halo 5 couldn't put it back above the PS4 for even a month due to this loss of momentum because fact of the matter is that the PS4 had just as many retail console exclusives as the X1 for the holidays (even though they were not megatons like Halo) and delivered several exclusives throughout the year in 2015.

And no, the PS4 does not sell on hype anymore. We are far beyond that. Hype on exclusives down the road sure (Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, No Mans Sky, Persona 5, etc.) but that in of itself further strengthens my point. Exclusives sell consoles because that is what makes it better than the competition.

I mean seriously, are people still blind to this fact?

And imo this is the downside of buying timed 3rd party exclusives instead of building up 1st party studios and permanent exclusives. If these games end up on other platforms they won’t contribute to the identity of the brand.

As you said, XB1 had huge momentum from holiday 2014 where it received great permanent exclusives (Forza Horizon 2, Sunset Overdrive and Halo MCC). Nearly all of its exclusives since then have been timed (Titanfall, Ori and the Blind Forest, Gears of War Ultimate and Rise of the Tomb Raider). And it seems that future XB1 exclusives will release on PC simultaneously (Quantum Break, Forza 6 Apex, Halo Wars 2, ReCore, Gears of War 4 and Scalebound).

Imagine if Microsoft generally had spent their money on developing more games themselves with 1st party studios. Imagine if franchises like Dead Rising, Ninja Gaiden, The Elder Scrolls (Oblivion), Bioshock, Mass Effect, Star Ocean, PvZ Garden Warfare, Titanfall, Quantum Break, ReCore, Scalebound etc. were all franchises and experiences only available on Xbox consoles. That would seriously contribute to a strong identity and brand. Xbox would most likely be my go-to console.

Yea those would be some real megatons indeed.  So much so we may have seen this gen go VERY differently overall.

Around the Network

Hell yes exclusives matter. They become the name, face and feel of the console. Companies do not market why they're the same as everyone else, they market why they're different. The only people that disagree were probably already tricked into buying an Xbox as no reasonable person can really believe a third party only multi platform box would seriously be the end all be all product.

If it weren't for exclusives Nintendo would imolode by the massive vacuum left behind by Mario and friends.

Yes and no.

Exclusives matter on a couple of levels, for one they help shape marketing image of the system, and it's important that image be associated with quality. However, you only really need a one or two big hitters for this. Gamers will always associate Nintendo as the home of Zelda and Mario, regardless of what other great games they might make. Likewise with Xbox and Halo, Sony and GT (though I suppose these days their image is mainly associated with Naughty Dog). Point is, you need a big name you can attach to your box marketing and say "that's us, that's what we do."

Now once you go beyond that, exclusives matter primarily to the hardcore gaming fans. People that will go out and buy a lot of new games every year and have the time to go through them fairly quickly. If you buy like 10+ new games a year you're probably in that category. Hell, if you're on a gaming forum, you're probably in that category. We're the guys that buy new platforms at or around launch, and the guys that are always looking for the next great game 5 minutes after we finish the last one. Things always have to be newer and better, and a nice looking exclusive is by default better than a nice looking multiplat, because you know not everyone can play it. But you can, cus you bought the right box. Instant gratification. You made the right choice.

On the flip side, no, they don't matter. Joe public mainstream gamer will buy maybe 5-6 new games a year (if that). They will be an assortment of annual sports titles and shooters to play with their friends, whatever game is the new hot item of the year (Fallout, Elder Scrolls, GTA, etc...), and maybe 1-2 spontaneous pick ups. The only time they will really care about an exclusive, is when/if it fits into one of those first 2 categories. The only thing they really want is a box that's a cheap as possible, has all the yearly multiplats they like, and all their friends in the same place.
