We all become immersed with our favourite games or even new ones most of the time but there are times when you just don't feel grabbed by the game's world and you have that nagging feeling that it's missing something, this poses me with the question; "what do you do to immerse yourself within the game?".
What I tend to do sometimes (not all the time) is go about searching the SweetFX database to find a nice graphical present for my game, what this does to the game is spruce up it's vibrancy, sometimes make the image brighter which depends on the presents you choose that other users have created. Recently I started playing Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen and while starting my journey I got that nagging feeling that the colours felt a bit drab and lifeless. Paying a quick visit to SweetFX and choosing a present that took my fancy sorted that out for me, a good sense of immersion was gained due to the general colour tone of the atmosphere around me, nights became that bit darker, flames had more colour to them and colours in general were more rich (not too rich though).
There are more ways to immerse yourself than just added visuals, another way for me recently was throwing in some music I liked from various fantasy films like Lord of the Rings. During my playthrough of DD:DA I threw in a tune from the Shire when I was roaming about the countryside or within towns (the game's OST is a tad reptitive outdoors and within cities and can get on my nerves/break immersion). When I found myself in battles or knew one was upcoming along with taking a journey towards a main quest I threw in The Bridge of Khazad-dûm, though DD wasn't the only game I threw LotR soundtrack towards, I did the same with LotR War in the North which added a good deal of immerse and got the action going for me.
Then of course there is another key to immersing yourself, roleplaying that is, though I don't really do much of that because it's not really my kind of thing but it is definitely another way of immersing yourself with the game's world.
For reference to the mention of visuals, I have a link to the SweetFX presents of Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen if anyone wants to see what differences the presents make. THe second part I'll of course link the two themes I used.
