Can it stay ahead when it eventually passes the vita next year?

I'm optimistic about Wii U outselling VITA. Although VITA might stick around for longer than Wii U, and take the lead again in the future.

i wouldn't be surprised if Wii U passes the vita this year. We may never know if this happened even if it does. We will only know for sure if Sony releases the numbers which they never will.

Wow, that's a bold claim. I'm not sure if the Wii U will pass the Vita, but if it does, it will barley pass it for a short time.

WiiU is over 11mil ssold,  where is vita at?

A lil over 12 mil I recall? I don't know what to believe. People claim overtracking and undertracking for both Wii U and Vita. Also, Wii U and Vita sell around the same, kind of evening each other out on a standard week, so I have some doubts whether Wii U will pass the Vita.

I can't believe this is still a thing.

...Anyway, Wii U has already outsold Vita. Vita is heavy overtracked here.

Technically nobody knows what the Vita has sold so we have no clue if/when Wii U will outsell it.

I do find it pretty amusing that all of these cries of "overtracked" are based on that CESA figure, which they clarified was an estimate:

"Got a clarification on Vita LTD from CESA:

"The figures for PlayStation vita (PlaystationTV included) were estimated by CESA".

Vita LTD in 2015 CESA Games White Paper were an estimate by CESA, NOT shipment data by Sony."

You know who else estimates figures? VGChartz :P

I find it more than plausible that VGC has overtracked it, however as you say, there's really no confirmation at this point and as such it's not going to get adjusted until we have something reliable!

Wii U very likly will pass Vita, but after NX launch Vita again will take the lead beacuse definatly will have longer life, probably till PS5 dont arives.

Only about a million behind and catching up fast due to the holidays in America mostly. But what about when Japan and Europe keep plugging along next year or what happens when the Wii U closes up shop long before the vita?

Will the Wii U have enough momentum to stay ahead in the long run?

Does it really matter? Afterall we are discussing a console verses a hand-held which is a bit like comparing apples to oranges. It would be much more appropriate comparing the WiiU against the PS4 and the XB1.

Of course if you want to compare the Vita against another hand-held we can look no further than the 3DS which is approx 56.2 million to the Vita's 12.5 million. Does that mean the Vita is doing pooly? Well in terms of comparison in sales "yes", however the real question should be "Are these handhelds making a profit in sales and game sales?" If the answer is "yes" for both then what is the problem.

Sony has made it rather impossible to know how many vita have sold, which suggests to me the lower sales estimates are probably the more accurate ones. Don't know though, it's just surprising that a handheld is struggling against the weakest (in sales, actually my favorite) console.

The Vita's fall from the PSP has been nearly as precipitous as the Wii U's fall from the Wii.
