Forums - Gaming Discussion - Japanese Developers are totally destroying Western Developers in Quality titles so far!

TheObserver said:

Now I get that this isn't a fair comparison cause we're basically comparing developers across 2 continents against just one little country.

But despite that huge gap in the number of developers, recources available to them Japanese Devs are really dominating this gen so far, atleast in terms of highly acclaimed games.

Here's a quick look at the highest rated games this gen, meaning 90+ metascore.

Note: For multiplatform games, I am using the score from the version that has the most reviews, usually this gen that means the PS4 version as it's the one devs send to the reviewers.

Metal Gear Solid V- 93

Super mario 3D World- 93

Bloodborne- 92

The Witcher 3- 92

Super Smash Bros.- 92

Bayonetta 2- 91

As you can see only one out of the 6 titles to get a 90+ metascore is from a Western Studio.

Now things may change next year with several of western games looking like they could score above 90.

The ones I think have a shot at that are:

Uncharted 4, Mass Effect Andromeda, Gears of War 4, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Dreams. I specifically say these 5 games because they're either part of a franchise that usually gets those 90+ scores or is being made by developer who has delivered a 90+ title in the recent past.

But the future also looks quite bright for the Japanese side as well, the games coming from them that have a shot at similar critical acclaim include Xenoblade Chronicles X, Street Fighter V, Zelda Wii U, The Last Guardian, Gran Turismo Sport, Final Fantasy XV. Yes I know FFXV is a controversial pick, but let's not forget that all main enteries until XIII have a 90+ metascore, so it does have the potential.

I'm a bit confused by why people are always talking about how Japanese devs have lost their touch, when they're the ones delivering the majority of the very best games.

Feels like the good ol' days, doesn't it?

It's really nice to see Japan making big competitive games again. The Japanese titles have me the most interested. I'm really looking forward to Gravity Daze 2, Valkyria: Azure Revolution, P5, and of course the new Zelda and Dragon Quest games, and normally I get tired of sequels. With western games like Uncharted, for example, I got tired of the linear levels, repetitive gameplay, and unoriginal plot lines. I wish western games would work more on their stories and originality.

The only western game that come to mind that I'm really excited about is Mirror's Edge 2. I'm surprised they didn't kill it by turning it into an FPS like Dead Space. When those two games came out I thought the company was turning a corner. I was becoming a fan. At least the interesting UI will always be useful to study for VR design. Why did RE, Dead Space, and Lost Planet all decide to ruin the formula for their games. Sometimes western developers almost make me want to give up games. Luckily there are still good studios around.

Too bad the games don't sell as well as AAA games.

That's because in America, the smartest men work in Advertising. The best minds are not busy making products but rather figuring out how to get everyone to buy whatever it is they're selling.

I like Japanese devs because overall, they account for about 90% of every other game genre besides FPS. They have a good variety of games. Can't believe 3D World's score though. I really didn't like it that much. It was more like Super Mario 3D Land HD Land. :0

This is a GREAT new! But still, in term of popularity however, Japanese games are declining....sadly TT_TT.
Remember, most people now playing on PC and smartphone. Games like Candy Crush, League of Legends, DOTA 2, CS:GO, MineCraft, Clash of Clans, Angry Birds, etc and etc are just dominating right now.

Another thing is that Western games have an Edge in big title Hollywood movies right now.
Ratchet & Clank, WarCraft and Assassin's Creed.

Nice try, but we all know best products is an opinion.

Not nice try, it's a fact. Games like Halo, GTA, CoD, etc have marketing budgets that go into hundreds of millions.

Often far more than what it costs to make these games.
